Reminds me of a girlfriend years ago who was getting married and told me she had registered for this beautiful "soup latrine".

It's archaic English, like learnt, burnt, dreamt, spoilt, and so on. I'm not sure if smelt is the current standard British English past tense of smell, but if the person is not a native speaker the error is understandable.
