I dont like the word "pal". For example, "I am going to go hang out with my pal, Eddie. I don't know why, it just bothers me. Can you just say friend instead?
A woman might say she's going out with her girl-friend tonight.
A man will say he's going out with his --- - friend tonight.
Misusing less and fewer. There's an ad campaign for some vaccination for girls (HPV? I forget), and its slogan is "One less"--as in, "Be one less girl with this disease." Checkout lines at grocery stores: "20 Items or Less."
Bruschetta is pronounced broosketta, not brooshetta. That's the Italian convention, that "sch" followed by "i" or "e" sounds like "sk". What drives me crazy isn't so much the mispronunciation alone but that it's been sanctioned as the "American pronunciation" of the word, with a big dose of stubbornness, as though the "sch" as "sk" is such an impossible linguistic hurdle that a compromise just had to be reached! Good grief, we say schedule and school without difficulty so what's the problem? We've gone global. We need to open up. When we see an Italian name on paper we should welcome the intuition, from incorporated words, to be able to pronounce it properly. Or are we gonna have American pronunciations of Italian surnames too?
I agree! As someone who speaks German - properly - it frustrates me when people "Americanize" German words. When I say them the correct way, they look at me as if I've grown an extra head!
It's when people should be writing its. Is this the fault of all the spell-checker programs in the world? I am a huge maker-of-mistakes, but that really drives me nuts!

Well I skipped about 10 pages (7 to 17), to get here to tell the world what my most hated words and phrases are. Yeah, I must say it's and its even confuse me sometimes, but I still not only hate the word because it's confusing to use, But also the fact that its/it's are very confusing for a lot of people.
Words/Phrases I hate:
1. Yo Man, he said [word], or dog, you he said [word]. Yeah no kidding bud, he's standing two feet away from you, I'm sure he heard it too.
2. The word get. It's overused and put in the wrong places, my english teacher taught me and now I even hate the word. Like, I get confused, I get [adjective]. Get in any context, sounds wrong.
3. Mate, it reminds me of a spouse or an animal, but it's used for a friend.
4. Guesstimate, you either guess or estimate not both.
5. A sammy, or a sammich... like really, just say sandwich.
6. When someone puts the letters th at the end of height, to make heightth?
7. I hate these meanings for cool: sick, beast, wicked.
8. I hate when people pronounce foreign words wrong such as mozzarella when it's pronounced motz-uh-relluh, its mutz-uh-relluh
9. Melancholy, it reminds me of melons and cauliflower describing the word sad.
10. Last but not least, Pus.. LOL.

I scream a little on the inside.
I'm with you on this one. My boss misuses this a lot and it's hard not to correct her.
Have you ever heard anyone say "funner" instead of "more fun than?" I believe you only have to hear that once to know immediately how horribly annoying (and glaringly ignorant) it is.
