I am frequently amazed/appalled by the number of people who don't recognize the vast differences in meaning between "exacerbate" and "exasperate".

However, I guess that it could be worse. I used to work with somebody who frequently used the non-word, "exerbate".
When I asked him if he meant to use the word, "exacerbate", his response was, "that's the same damn thing".
Ummmm...no.

The beginning of somebody's tale of woe, regarding his car:
In the morning the car crunk fine.

Is that a good thing, or a bad thing?

That jogged my memory back to an incident from about 30 years ago, when one of my counselees uttered a particularly unfortunate misplaced modifier. I was chairing a parent-teacher conference, the purpose of which was to try to elevate the student's level of effort and--hopefully--his academic grades.

All of the teachers were appropriately encouraging, and the boy's mother received the information with gratitude--while the boy sat sullenly. When we were about to conclude, I asked the student if he was ready to go back to class, and his answer was, "I'm tired. I'd like to go home and sleep with my mother".

The eyes of all of the teachers turned--as one--in my direction, and we exchanged silent glances that spoke...volumes. Meanwhile, Mommie Dearest--who was not exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer-- never displayed any awareness that her son had misplaced a modifier.

I wonder if she has early stages of Dimentia. My dad had Dimentia for his last few years.

Well, at least we have identified someone who is...dim...
