Default Purpose & Use of ~

Have noticed since last summer how ~ has been replacing dashes/minus signs on so many forums. Now that I am also seeing it inserted in quite a few posts regarding cities here on c-d, just did a search for the purpose/uses/meanings of the ~ and came up blank, so thanking the stars for this thread :>) .

Is its sudden popularity just a fad? Sorry for sounding ignorant, but I'd thought it was just a fancy dash lol. When I first started seeing it consistently (going by contexts of posts), I had previously assumed that it indicated "Under, give or take a few" when people preceeded numbers & stats with it, but it's used so much now that I can only guess what people really mean anymore. It's pretty much everywhere.
This isn't a complaint, I'm just curious (didn't want to start a thread for something so silly). Thanks for any insight.

Thanks, suzy_q! I didn't know its name.
Your link had a link to its Wiki:
"(Note that ~ is used for an approximation that is poor, otherwise use ≈ .)"

This new epidemic of poor approximations must be due to the ≈ not being as easy to type lol.

Poor, shy Kyle is doing his best to hide and become invisible, and you just defiantly notice him!

20 min cardio is not enough... Try at least 40 min. 1 hour of cardio should be your goal. Especially if you still want to loose some weight.

Aaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Whyyyyyyyyyyyyy.

I am experiencing visions of globs of adipose tissue flying through the air as that person "looses" some weight, and...it isn't pretty...to say the least.

As a result of those mental images, I just may have to skip dinner tonight, as they make me feel slightly nauseated.
I just hope that I am not haunted by those images when I try to sleep tonight.
