I just realized that I thought it was pronounced Nef-er-tee-tee. Although, that may not be enough of a distinction for a boy in 13th grade.
The same thing happened when Lake Titicaca was mentioned in a presentation at a local library. The man knew it was coming, so he told the kids, "Don't laugh when I tell you the name of the lake, okay?" and of course all the kids giggled.

During my first year as a teacher of US History, I was really dreading the unit in the curriculum that covered The Non-intercourse Acts (a series of Congressional Acts that regulated/banned trade and land sales between Indian tribes and non-Indians). I just knew that this was going to produce nervous laughter and perhaps some inappropriate comments from some of the students, but I bravely soldiered on with this lesson.
To my surprise and relief, there was no apparent reaction to the title of that legislation, and we managed to get through the class period without any distractions. At the end of the period, I said something along the lines of...I want to compliment all of you on your maturity for not making any inappropriate comments during today's lesson.
I was greeted by confused looks and finally one of the students asked, "What did you think we were going to make inappropriate comments about?" Realizing at that point that these 16-17 year olds were not familiar with the word "intercourse" and its sexual implications, I simply replied...Never mind!...and I was then "saved by the bell".
