To be a warrior is not a simple matter of wishing to be one.
It is rather an endless struggle that will go on to the very last moment of our lives.
Nobody is born a warrior, in exactly the same way that nobody is born an average man.
We make ourselves into one or the other.
A warrior considers himself already dead, so there is nothing to lose.
The worst has already happened to him, therefore he’s clear and calm;
judging him by his acts or by his words, one would never suspect that he has witnessed everything.
Nobody is born a warrior, in exactly the same way that nobody is born an average man.
We make ourselves into one or the other.
No ray of sunshine is ever lost, but the green which it awakens needs time to sprout and it is not always given to the sower to see the harvest. Everything worth doing is done on faith.
A quote that I love recently appeared during circumstances very special to me.
Last Saturday, my daughter graduated from college (one of my sons did, too - it was a busy day!) and the speaker was Alan Page*, NFL Hall of Fame defensive lineman and former justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court. He is a very humble and softspoken man, and his lovely speech touched on character and purpose in relation to the general state of things these days. He ended his speech with the closing passage from Dr. Seuss's The Lorax: "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot,
Nothing is going to get better. It's not."
My daughter looked up at me from her seat, knowing The Lorax is one of my favorite books. I love, love, love the fact that he quoted that book!**
* - I learned who the commencement speaker was going to be before my daughter did. When I informed her, she said "Ellen Page? Really?". She was a bit disappointed when I informed her that, no, it was Alan Page.
** - Page has co-written several children's books himself.
