Absolutely, both Kearney and Resonance (creator of WRLDCTY Festival and the Best Cities Report which was another thread a few months ago) do an astoundingly thorough job! But all of this is like sports talk...people who can't or won't do do something get the chance to talk crap about others. It's totally fine and part of what makes it so great...the endless debate. I assume nobody at those global consulting firms takes any of this criticism personally, they get to do something fun and get paid to do it and of course you can't come close to pleasing everyone with these kinds of rankings.

Kearney is a very large firm so I just assume they put in some serious resources and time into this every year...it certainly looks like they do. Resonance is a very small and relatively new company but I'm quite confident from limited interactions with them that they really love doing this and take it extremely seriously.

But Kearney’s rank are terrible for emerging markets...
Only 6 cities from emerging markets get into top 30 : Beijing / Shanghai / Seoul / Moscow / Bueno Aires / Dubai
Only 3 made it to the Outlook list (Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Taipei)

At this point Korea and Taiwan are hardly emerging markets. They are only classified as emerging markets because the currency is less accessible (esp. TWD).

It's a fair observation, but I'm not sure it makes the GaWC classifications better than Kearney index.

GaWC's classification better reflects the economic realities rather than ranking almost all cities in the top 30 from developed countries

Using IMF's classification of countries in the world into 7 broad groups: https://www.imf.org/en/Publications/...lect-aggr-data

ADVANCED ECONOMIES (NON-EURO AREA) (20 economies)
Kearney (16) : New York City / London / Tokyo / Hong Kong / Los Angeles / Chicago / Singapore / Washington, D.C. / Sydney / San Francisco / Seoul / Melbourne / Toronto / Boston / Montreal / Miami
GaWC (12) : London / New York City / Hong Kong / Singapore / Tokyo / Sydney / Los Angeles / Toronto / Chicago / Seoul / Zurich / Melbourne

ADVANCED ECONOMIES (EURO AREA) (19 economies)
Kearney (9) : Paris / Brussels / Berlin / Madrid / Vienna / Amsterdam / Munich / Barcelona / Frankfurt
GaWC (6) : Paris / Amsterdam / Milan / Frankfurt / Madrid / Brussels

EMERGING AND DEVELOPING ASIA (30 economies)
Kearney (2) : Beijing / Shanghai
GaWC (5) : Shanghai / Beijing / Mumbai / Kuala Lumpur / Jakarta

EMERGING AND DEVELOPING EUROPE (16 economies)
Kearney (1) : Moscow
GaWC (3) : Moscow / Warsaw / Istanbul

LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN (33 economies)
Kearney (1) : Buenos Aires
GaWC (2) : Mexico City / Sao Paulo

MIDDLE EAST AND CENTRAL ASIA (32 economies)
Kearney (1) : Dubai
GaWC (1) : Dubai

SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA (45 economies)
Kearney (0) :
GaWC (1) : Johannesburg

Dubai is correctly included, it is able to attract businesses, workers and tourists from many countries, both developed and developing. Doha should be included too. Both Dubai and Doha have many flights from ALL continents, most other Asian cities don't.

Shanghai and Beijing are as global as Seoul, Toronto and Sydney, all three are more global than Taipei.
Some other cities in the list do not have many foreigners from many countries across the world, are listed because they are the largest cities in countries with population larger than Germany, France and the U.K.

It depends on your personal definition of "global cities" then. For me, present-day economy is simply one of a dozen or more factors I would consider. It is a very important factor to me, but overall only perhaps 25% of my final evaluation.
