If innovation were to be considered (admittedly debatable as to what exactly that refers to here, but I’ll go with tech/brands as the main thing), then Seattle should be high up. Microsoft, Amazon, Starbucks and you can throw in grunge for good measure.

This seems like the biggest change in the list, as another user noted esp. given how San Francisco and Boston seem to sink you'd think Canada and America move in opposing directions.
Canada is a large country and has 3 major cities. Toronto is its largest and premier city. Toronto has evolved and belongs on this list for sure. Montreal was earlier in its history they premier city of Canada that issues over the Province of Quebec by its Seperatist Movement, had it change to Toronto's favor. The US has many times that number of cities that compete within the country for its Corporate might. US Cities have many evolving at once and some cities growing less as a result.

The US has just 2 mega-cities in size in NYC And LA. Chicago is still short of that and not growing at this time. Even NYC has stopped and LA city. Just how the USA ihas migrations toward differing regions in eras and decades and this current one has the USA Southern tier fastest growing today.

Canada has no mega-city as Toronto also falls short. Many on this Global list are mega-cities regions of 10+million people. Most US cities on the list are not. nor the premier city's of the Nation. Kearney gives its stats in what it uses to come to this list. You can find it though their link on their criteria.

^^^ Australia is smaller and somehow both Sydney and Melbourne are above Toronto.

How does Vancouver get above Seattle?? Seattle has a plethora of major corporate head offices, is more economically diverse, 50% larger, has a bigger airport, and is a very high wage city while Vancouver is just a port and a money laundering centre.

Toronto is a bigger global financial city than Sydney and Melbourne, and more connected to NYC and London.

Seattle is overshadowed by LA and SF, all in the US west coast.

Vancouver isn't really important in the world, but is the gateway to Canada from the Pacific .

Toronto doesn’t feel like a world class city at all.

Interestingly they also published a Top 30 Global Cities Outlook list in their link. This changes dramatically every year. My interpretation of how they evaluate this is on what the cities have been doing to improve their future prospects.

Well, we do not see our US Southern Fast Rising cities where some cities like Houston city-proper and metros like Dallas/Ft Worth and Houston metro look to go after Chicagoland too and Toronto with its Golden Triangle who did pass Chicago city-proper in 2013. but Toronto seen as SKYROCKETING to NYC or London's current position.

Where is the Dallas's Houston's Atlanta's on this Outlook list? Too many USA Cities vying for a piece of the pie in migrations of Corporations and people. Yes mighty NYC fall even below Chicago seen as dropping..... It is our own fault as a Nation that needs to promote Corporate expansion in the cheaper regions since moving to China has ended.

Still this Outlook did not gain them a entry? That is my assessment over which cities fell. Socialist Europe (as some label it in the US) is clearly not failing in Outlook. Also the rise of 3 of Australia's cities and it is not a large population of what 11-mil?

I am not dissing the list at all. Just what I see in how Boston is seen as moving up.... yet it is not a fast growing city or metro really. We know Toronto is fast-growing by immigration that is not under US immigration limits control, but Canada does do immigration by its merit system of basically needing skills Canada needs or you will be unlikely to get a visa.

I know Kearney does give its criteria it uses. That does not change by year.

Interesting! Based on the definitions I've read, megacities are usually defined as metropolitan areas exceeding 10 million people, though some define them as actual city populations between 5-8 million people. (Sources are those quoted in this wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megacity).

Based on this, NYC and LA would be the only US cities that count as you mentioned, though Chicago is knocking at the door. That said, I'd argue that more US cities than just NYC and LA are megacities in terms of influence, but maybe I'm just a biased American!
