Do I judge someone who takes a job they can't afford to commute to, and also can't afford to move closer to? Yes. Totally foolish. I don't feel sorry for you at all.

And by the way, an "older Prius" isn't very old. I own a 93 Nissan pickup that works perfectly. Super cheap to insure and register.

What are you looking for here? People to tell you life is hard? That you should be able to have what you want without having to change anything?

I have to wonder why you are looking for that here, instead of from friends and family. I will have to assume you know they will tell you the same things you're hearing here, and that they won't have sympathy for your supposed problems. You're hoping the people on this forum will agree with you and not with your family. Well, you were wrong.

Room mates. That's the way most people who are away from family deal with it. Put a note up on a BB at work or talk to HR.

I am having a little trouble understanding the problem. Full-time work at $16 an hour is $32K a year or about $2600/month minus taxes. $900/month or a little over 33% of gross is not an unusual housing expense ratio for coastal California. Are you paying off payday loans or something? Where is the money going?

Look for temporary housing on Airbnb that is cheap, comfortable, safe, and closer to your job. Unfortunately with your salary and location in Southern California. You don't have many options.

How much rent is affordable for you? You may need to rethink about raising your income if other commitments are weighing heavily on your situation.

Heck, when I was single and worked in NYC I had roommates. Either adjust your expectations or find a job in a community where you can afford housing. Don't consider either Portland or Seattle unless you can find a job with professional level compensation. Housing is expensive there too.

FWIW a commute of 1.25 hour in the Bay area is not uncommon.

I told my employer I had these issues before my job started. Now I told them it’s been three weeks and no luck. I’ve applied to two other jobs closer to my current home and have interviews. My boss likes me and asked finances if I could get a dollar boost in my wage to 16 an hour. Rooms cost about 950 dollars. I make 15 an hour. My boss had a second option but didn’t like me working remotely but said he’d be open or he said maybe fast track into the higher position with some work in another department.

I don’t know what to do.

I also got a parking ticket my first day because I had no clue where to park and on third day was hit by a truck on the freeway in traffic. Thankfully it was minor and I didn’t die in my small Prius.

Thanks,

Cityguy
Look for a room at $900 that is closer to work, but further than you have been looking, even if it is just 25% closer than the present.

Sounds like many who are the working poor. Wages don't match the cost of living. Insurance, housing, Transporation, food.
