Moving costs money , OP can barely afford to rent a room. Op needs to stay put at his job , it will get better . He has no debt , obviously he is smart with money .
I agree , I was lucky enough to be in a situation that I was able to move out of Colorado. I guess you could call middle Tennessee the deep south. One of the reasons that I moved was the COL was horrible in Colorado , I knew the chances of my sons ever owning a home would be non existent. It is so inexpensive here and not many homeless, that is very telling. Is it perfect? Heck no , but I didn't want to be a slave to a mortgage or a snow shovel LOL. Many folks exist on 15/hour here.
People in your situation get roommates, or they get married to a spouse who has an equal or better income.
You might look around and see if there are any mobile home parks. Price out the cost of buying one of the older mobile homes plus park rent and see if your budget will do that.
You still didn’t answer why you can’t keep commuting from your other location? That’s what often ends up happening. People either do really long commutes or they get second jobs and have a short commute. Either way, you’ll probably be using the same time each week if you are spending 1+ hour each way commuting or working around 10-15 hour a week in a second job.
My sister lives an hour and 15 away. I pay a little. The idea it was transitional housing. I lived in the same city where I work 2 years ago and I got a room for $850 and I had a back up option too. That took me 2 weeks. It's been a month and I cant even get one $900 place to live without having to deal with pot smokers and with my allergies I cant live with pot. I was tempted to negotiate my wage before starting, but I thought well I can see if I can do without. I can't do without now that I realize.
Trade the prius for a van, live in the van during the week and go back to your sisters on weekends and do laundry. Shower at work or join a gym so you can use facilities. Save up money and look for a long range place to stay.
I think you have to just stick it out a little, it seems like your boss thinks you’re good enough to keep around, you don’t need to immediately leave your sister's house I presume.
Otherwise, look for a part-time job that will help you earn that extra few bucks you need for the rent. And make sure the second job is located where your other job is of course! I understand not wanting to work more hours, but it’s only until your other job pays enough for you to manage without. Maybe you could try to find work at some place that would benefit in other ways, ie at a gym, or a grocery store, where you could get some kind of discount too.
If you're only working 40-45 hours I'd get a second job too. When I started out I worked 80 or more for the vast majority of my first decade. It paid off and got me to where I am now. Sure it was rough at the time but it's doable before you have kids in the picture. Now it's closer to 45-50 most weeks. Get a roommate too - they make for some fun stories later LOL!
Any chance of picking up some overtime at your job? If you're not salaried that can be a big win for you and your employer too!
