It's hard to spin facts like these, but the media will try.......
I'm not sure I understand your spin. The economy has grown substantially since 2007. Apparently half a million jobs were superfluous, perhaps more if you count the number of people working part time at what should be a full time job. Automation has continued in the intervening 8 years, and productivity has exploded.
It's well understood that there will never again be enough jobs for everyone. That's why we need a social safety net. People decry socialism, but haven't come up with any other way of dealing with the chronically unemployable. Give them their HDTV, subsidized housing and food stamps, and be grateful for the exceptional 10% that drag themselves out of poverty.
ShampooBanana? That's really fun. Actually, most call centers I need them are overseas. That means I don't call them. I was pleasantly surprised when Apple's customer service originated in Research Triangle Park. But after a while the guys here were inept. They'd start reading their script or thinking on their own and couldn't help resolve issues. I stopped using them and became proficient enough (for the most part) to do my own debugging. So, that train isn't stopping here with customer support.
Low-paying retail jobs and fast-food chains still can't be outsourced. So, those jobs will remain here. IT used to keep American faces to just show the public we're still here but it was a cover-up because the main jobs in various companies were overseas. I lived through it and saw it.
There are still a surprising number of call center jobs here in the US, and the numbers are growing. A lot of them are based in places like Phoenix where big data centers are pretty safe from natural disasters and wages are fairly low combined with a big labor supply. I'm sure the call center jobs in places like India are still growing, as well. Sadly, even with things like the Do Not Call List they have only become more commonplace.
BTW, my name is a play on words of where I used to live (Champaign-Urbana, IL).
And you have no reason to question my statement, other than an unfounded belief that everyone should be successful regardless of their lack of ability. You can quibble over a percentage point or three, but the fact is that a large portion of the US population is naturally inferior and will never amount to anything.
Actually I have very good reason to question. When someone says and I quote: "Half the population is below average" I would very much like to see a study or a credible link that states such a thing. Otherwise you are merely just stating YOUR opinion. You do know the difference between fact and opinion? But carry on stating your OPINIONS and stop making blanket statements as if they are facts. The fact still remains that you don't have a source other than your opinion.
I would welcome a pay raise though. Our small company was bought by a larger company and some reps from the larger company said our compensation would be increased. that was ten months ago when they bought us.
As a manager I learned that the bottom 10% of your workforce should most likely be terminated. Also never hire the people that have been laid off during the first rounds of a workforce reduction.
While that is a lovely thought, there is ALWAYS a new bottom 10% of your workforce. They USED TO BE the 'next to the bottom' 9%, or the 'next to the next to the bottom' 8%.
Here is an example of what I am talking about when I mention that a large part of the population is naturally inferior and will fail miserably on their own merits.
These are apparently millennial college students who won't be able to understand why nobody wants to hire them. All they are fit for is menial jobs.
This does not condemn the entire generation. These people are obviously self-selected as incapable of thinking of anything else to do but hang out at the beach. However, this is a great picture of what millennial losers look like in their native environment.

What does asking a few floozies on the beach prove? The reporter could have very well come up to them and asked them to look like idiots for a laugh.
Are there dumb Millenials? Sure, but there have been fools in every generation that can't stick their finger in their rear ends.

Well, that has to be the case, if it were the median average (which is the average used in social sciences predominantly), by definition. That isn't an opinion.

It's not just millennials are clueless if you go by man on the street responses. Anyone remember Obamacare vs. Affordable Care Act on Jimmy Kimmel. Just about everyone didn't want Obamacare but most wanted the ACA despite them being the same exact thing.

The other thing is any time you have a man on the street response, you may get several who know things but if that don't fit what you are looking for, you wont include it. Take the Obamacare vs. ACA video I posted for example, I am sure you found at least three people not shown who knew it was the same thing and didn't sway on the issue depending on which name was used.
Definitely varies by industry. We can't hire people fast enough, and there's a shortage of people available for the positions open. But, it's because the companies refuse to raise wages for this skilled profession to a level that would draw people in. The education required is extremely expensive, and it takes a very long time to make a decent income doing this. College students are opting for other fields. It's biting the companies in the arse. They're being too short-sighted.
