I did this poll last year, and I'd be curious to see how things are different this year, with Christmas falling on a Thursday rather than a Wednesday like last year.
I'm intending this poll for employees in the US who are working a traditional Mon-Fri job. I'm not intending it for teachers (who always get a long break for Christmas), or for jobs that don't follow a traditional schedule (such as retail, or 24/7/365 jobs such as healthcare).
In the poll, select all days that your employer is closed this year. Choose "Other" if they are also closed another day that is not listed, such as Friday, Dec. 19 (unlikely). Post here if you have anything interesting to say or if you chose "Other".
To answer for myself: my employer always closes between Dec. 25 and Jan. 1, inclusive. We get paid holidays for 4 of those days (this year, they are Dec. 25, 26, 29, and Jan. 1). We have to use vacation time for the other 2 days (this year, they are Dec. 30 and 31). For the purposes of the poll, I will count all 6 of those days as being days off (since I think of Dec. 30 and 31 as de facto holidays, and I think of having 2 fewer vacation days, since that's basically how those days work). The office is open on Friday, Jan. 2, 2015, resulting in an isolated workday, although most people (including myself) plan to take that day off. (I'm not counting it as a day off in the poll).
Don't answer as part of the poll, but post here: do you plan to take any extra days off? I always take off Dec. 24 and Jan. 2, and will do so this year, especially, as I said above, since Jan. 2 falls on a Friday. So, I will be using a total of 4 vacation days (the required ones on Dec. 30 and 31, and two extra on Dec. 24 and Jan. 2) in order to get a 12 day break (my last day of work will be Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2014, and I will return to work on Monday, Jan. 5, 2015).
I should also mention that having that much time off is not the norm in my field. Most engineering firms close on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1 only.
Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. I know many companies closing down between Christmas - New Year's... Best thing ever! I hope my next job would be like that!
OP... Why don't you put the name of the holidays rather than the actual date on the poll ?!
We only officially get off on December 25th and January 1st. But we get so many vacation days that most people take off half of December and the first week of January.

In my past few jobs, we would get the Thurs. holiday off, but NOT the regular Friday day after. Many folks end up taking PTO for that Friday anyways so they can make long term vacation plans anyways. I actually enjoyed coming into work on Fri. since nothing really got done and it was practically a free, paid day. My commute was also <20 to 35 minutes, so that makes it manageable.
I work in technology. It's product-based, but not much gets done in December with holidays like Hanukkah and New Years day.
Happy Holidays!
