When I was a kid (35 years ago) it was more common to see companies close from Christmas to New years but dont see that as much anymore. Sure as seen in this forum there are a few but not many anymore.

You could do what I do and take a vacation day. we also work the day after Thanksgiving. This year my department gave us the option of taking the day off, we just had to use out vaction time to do it. I never seem to use all of the 5 and a half weeks I get so I took them up on it.

None. Work online customer service for retail. They don't believe in giving a day off to us but the physical store is closed.

Thanks, but to be honest, I;m not really being a benevolent soul.

I calculated the number of employees who will ask for the time off. I calculated the number of employees who are attached to contract locations where they have reduced work or actual shut downs. I calculated those who will work but would have so little to do because of reductions that they might as well stay home. And I calculated the number of employees who will be needed to man the office but not do anything just because the doors are open. I also took into consideration all the expenses related to being open and the cost to handle those expense just because we are open.

I would have been nice if my only reasoning was to be kind to the employees, but truth is, it was just simpler, easier and more cost effective to just pay everyone to have a two week paid vacation on me.
