Gretings...!

Did (or do) you have a job or a career? How did/do you classify it?

Happy Trails,

Agree with texdav. What difference does it make? Whether I described my several occupations as jobs or careers has nothing to do with how they impacted my life. Being retired now, I'd say their primary impact is whether or not they provided pensions and benefits.

Not sure where the OP was going with this but there is the question of which gives you the best shot at a solid retirement?

I always said to my son if the job does not require special talents/education and anyone can be trained to do it within a few hours/days then it is a job, not a career/profession.

Also if hourly pay and a uniform required then it is a job, not a profession.

A career is the same title over the years (something you are skilled/trained in), it does not matter what company you work for as long as that title is the same. A job is a title that might change frequently or it is in a field you were not trained in, although a job can mold into a career later down the road.

I've had nine jobs in the same career (field). It doesn't have to be a ladder, but it is easier to keep employed (getting jobs) if they are somewhat related.

I would definitely consider what I do as a job. When you face the constant threat of being replaced by some cheap labor from the local temp agency, it is definitely a job. And I work in IT.
