Sick days maybe. I'd find a new place to work if they gave any favor to not taking your vacation.

Second, how is he not working for free? He gets paid to work say 230 work days per year. If instead he works 240, he just worked 10 extra days at the same salary and bonus. If he had a job that paid more for working more, then yeah, he wouldn't be working for free, but that is not the case here.

To make it even worse for him, our department is very good as far as people taking their allocated vacation goes. It is not frowned upon in the least to do so.
230 days X 8 hours a day at $40 an hour would be $73,600 a year lets say. 240 days X 8 hours a day at $40 an hour would be $76,800 a year. How was anyone working for free? Not sure what you make per an hour but the $40 an hour number sounds reasonable. Not sure on how many hours a day that you work or what your schedule is. Still how would he lose money?

His example is that you only get paid for 230 days. So by working 10 more days he's getting paid the same. Hence he's working for "free"

You don't get it. If he gets paid $100K with the expectation of working 230 days due to getting say 20 days of vacation, but instead he works 240 days, his earnings to # of working days ratio goes down. Therefore, he worked 10 extra days for free.

We are on salary not hourly wage so it's not like we make more for working more.

I was at a job for 5 years and I hardly ever used the vacation time. I ended up with a very nice check when it came time to leave My current job has a policy of use it or loose it though.

Here is an example of our hours.

I work a 40 hour work week. Time over 40 in a week or over 8 in a day is overtime.

we are paid every other week or 26 pay periods a year.

since I have been here over 10 years I accrue 160 hours of vacation time a year. I also accrue 48 hours of sick time a year. These are combined in a paid time off account. When a holiday such as Christmas, New Years, 4th of July comes around we get 8 hours of PTO for that as well. I normally take the day off but have worked them in the past banking the time in my PTO account. We are also given 48 hours of long term sick time that is available if we have a sickness or something else that would take us away from the hospital for more than 3 days. So if you are really sick or on disability you can tap into that time. At the end of the year they will give you a check for 48 hours over and above 240 banked into your long term sick leave account

We are also given 24 hours of discretionary bonus time that we get on the anniverary of starting here.

What that gives me is a total of 280 hours of time that I can use during the year. I can save it, in the case of the long term sick time get a check at the end of the year, or cash out up to 80 hours of vacation time and the 24 hours of discretionary time. That still leaves me with 80 hours of PTO to use when I want.

Would have been better to have that information. Most people are not on salary. Still does it matter why he does what he does? He likes what he does or wouldn't be there.

I have this co-worker of mine who has only taken around half his vacation days the last few years. He's pretty old, single, seems to have a lot money so I don't think it's fear of being fired that prevents him from taking all his vacation days.

He was working for free, right? Dumb.
And you care because?

One, I think it's sad.

Two, it sets up employer expectations that other employees drop their vacation days too. It's not like that here, but I could see that taking shape elsewhere.

Did you ever consider the fact that the guy might have Asperger syndrom?

Or maybe he just really enjoys what he does and gets fulfillment from it.

The fact that somebody lives his life different than you do doesn't make him "dumb," Orton.
