There has been rumors of the company being closed down and I just can't understand why someone with a family to support would want to get involved in that type of conversation. I mean if it was to happen then we would just deal with it then but to talk about that kind of news is just ODD to me. And the fact that someone new just started yesterday makes the rumors seem false because if that was really the case then there would be a freeze on new hires.
I will never understand why someone would want to engage in a conversation about the company closing down when we all would be affected. I mean they are discussing like they won't be out of work.
Why wouldn't you discuss the possibility of something that would profoundly affect your life with others in the same boat?

Yes I received the laptop back last week with a contract stating that I'm responsible for any damages

This is not true. Many times change overs in management means change over in employees and it has to do with loyalties. I've seen it a number of times in my lifetime.
