Which means that they are expecting to collect them, and if you don't turn it in after you're canned, you won't get your last paycheck and they can go after you for further compensation.

So if you had been on the Titanic you would have been one of those people sitting in the dining room playing cards while others were trying to get into lifeboats?

If we don't think about it the ship won't sink.

Sadly, life doesn't work in a way that if we don't discuss unpleasant topics they just go away.

I agree. Also it's human nature to discuss what is happening to the company with other co-workers. People are scared and nervous about their jobs and they just want to know what is going on so they talk to each other about it. Just because you don't want to make someone mad or sad won't change the situation.

Also it might help you to stay in the loop and listen to what others are saying. You sitting there working and ignoring everyone could put you in a disadvantage position.

I would look for work RIGHT NOW. Get a job before the herd.

You need to read the book "Who Moved My Cheese?". Some people will be in denial and not working proactively for a new job BEFORE they lose their current one. They think the boss will "take care of them" in the end.

And the fact that someone new just started yesterday makes the rumors seem false because if that was really the case then there would be a freeze on new hires.

I will never understand why someone would want to engage in a conversation about the company closing down when we all would be affected. I mean they are discussing like they won't be out of work.
I personally don't find anything at all odd about discussing something at work that affects everyone there and will change your life dramatically.

If there's talk of it it's on everybodies mind so to just ignore is wierder to me than talking about it.

Also maybe someoen is friendly with someoen in upper management and knows more than some others do.

Use your degree in "Communications" to think about why some people would want to be talking about possible job loss. It may be not so much "gossip", but fear of the unknown. In uncertain times, people look to eachother for comfort and reassurance, or maybe reality checks. It's not that tricky to figure out...seriously.

You don't own the company, you're not management level and you're as much in the dark as anyone else so what could you possibly say to anyone about keeping the doors open?

Good idea! That'll cheer everyone up for a while. Of course when they find out that you started the unfounded rumor they'll all have it out with you in a dark alley after closing but, what the heck, you'll have briefly spread some joy around ...
