My pet peeve with customers is when they're talking to me (the salesman) while they have a cell phone plastered onto their ear... trying to multi-task 2 conversations at the same time. I have to keep a polite face on, while deep down I want to grab his phone and stomp it with my foot.

Yup....THAT is the ABSOLUT most ignorant thing one can do....I hate it.
I acknowledge people right away, will wait for them for a sufficient period of time to give them a chance (it DOES happen, and I understand that)...
But, if they keep me waiting, ignoring me but standing by my meat counter....still yapping on the cell...I will walk away, to tend to the next person (One person should not be able to stall other customers, which are patiently waiting)
I can use my valueble time to help that little old lady down there REALLY needing help, or you will have to WAIT, until I get back.
For some it sounds rude, but it's NOT....some people should just come one day working in retail. They would be cured for life....LOL..

I used to work at an attraction and they would come up and say "Yeah I need a coke."
I'd say, "Yeah, me too! It's really hot today, isn't it?" or
"And I need a Tylenol".

When they'd say "I want a coke", I'd say "And I want a Mercedes for my birthday!"
I'd say it smiling and most would get the humor and end up rephrasing.
I just ignored the cellers like they weren't there until they finished their convos if they made me wait.

thiers a few bad apples in every bushel, but for the most part, customers should be treated as "guests" you kiss thier butt, they came to you or your place of retail business, so it should be a privilege to serve/ wait on them, for repeat business, and consumer loyalty,
customers, ultimately sign our paycheck, be thankful for them, those of us in retail,,,have enormous competition, and when you are dealing with a customer, you, at that moment, are reflecting the entire company's image.
this may sound strange, but i love interacting with customers, love suggesting selling, and answering questions about a product and how to use, it.
customers are our friends and neighbors, not faceless consumers.
yes, some are rude, arrogant, thoughtless, but hopefully its the minority.
and as a retailer, we should know our product better than the customers and be able to answer most questions,,,
they say 70-80% of communication is non-verbal, meaning tone of voice, body language, etc,,, so, we may satisfy a customers need, but still offer poor service in thier eyes, its the customer, not us, that determines how good the service is/was.
its because i see such poor training, rude, mindless clerks at many stores, that i get frustrated,,when i ask a simple question,,and someone looks at me with a duhhhhhhhhhhhhh look (and has 18 rings all over his/her face, and hair is green..) that im so anal about customer service when it comes to the stores i work in.

just my two cents.

MBM I agree. I used to be pretty impatient with customer service, but working in retail the last 3 weeks has enabled me to see the light.

From what I've seen, most customers are very nice, and the rude ones are far, far into the minority - thankfully. In fact, I enjoy doing this. as a salesman, I sincerely want to help customers find what they are looking for... and when I go back to the flip side of being a customer, I will be able to see that in the people who do sales.

It's the bad apples I get annoyed with, though I don't show it... as to not hurt business.

Oops, should have clarified further. I did do the above in a humorous fashion, it was actually great for breaking the ice and it worked best on the people who looked grumpy. I looked them in the eyes smiling and it worked! (I was usually in a good mood and wouldn't have attempted it if I wasn't or there'd be heck to pay.)

Stand by the cellphone thing.

If they make you wait while they have their convo, then -- as in any setting -- they should simply step aside for the next person until they are through. It's certainly not fair to the people behind them. I've been behind too many in lines and only hope all businesses follow suit. It's way inconsiderate and they either don't know any better, or don't care. Not the peoples' stuck behind them fault they're so self-centered. They're not Heart Surgeons on emergency call!
Don't wish to turn this into a cell-thread, but the (pun intended) line has to be drawn somewhere. It's quite out of hand.
