I guess there are lots of us who love mountains - hey I can change my log in if you want me to - no big deal.
We are building a "not so big house" - a small cottage in the woods - not like those homes that look like a ship landed on the mountainside. We found a great architect who lives on the next ridge over and he (like us) is interested in buildings that complement the land not overwhelm it. We can't wait to move out of suburbia and into the peace and quiet of the mountains and this mountain community.
Rock Cafe...Cheap prices, decent sandwiches, weak coffee!
Best Steak in area...plus other good stuff...Weaverville Milling Co. IMHO.
Ed
Ed - I am sure you have discovered the Well Bred Bakery in Weaverville - words do not do the pastries and lunch items justice. Also we love Stoney Knob Cafe in Weaverville.
Oh yeah!!! Made a wonderful impression on our first visit...its one of the things that I love about the area, Weaverville itself and its whole demeanor. I think that W-ville, Mars Hill, Marshall and Hot Springs are the coolest little towns.
Having lived in Florida sprawl for so long I am mesmerized by the entirely different lifestyle. Having lived in Pinellas and Pasco Counties here in the Tampa/St. Pete area I can tell you its wall to wall cars & getting worse....and at least in our area, nothing like a Well Bred, or Stoney Knob....
We have tried many of the eateries in the area...
still have more to check out though....what's best Pizza around?
Did'nt care for Blue Mountain.
Yes, Madison County does have locals... one of the few places left in NC with any. But it is also a thriving artist and organic farming community. More and more people are moving in that have interests other than moonshine. There are art galleries, antique shops, a fantastic Farmer's Market, restaurants that serve some "city food". There is a yoga/pilates studio, condos overlooking the river, cappucino, a coupla gyms, rafting/canoeing, oh, the list goes on. It has changed alot since 1986. Perfectly safe place to venture into. We'd love to have you.
Oh, and visit while you can.. there are developments coming in faster than you can blink. One with over 900 ! houses. Many others in the 300+ range. Come while you can still walk without bumping into to someone else.

We are just hoping that the sprawl will be slow in coming - we are leaving a very populated suburban area outside Chicago - Our 15 acres of paradise outside Marshall will hopefully remain that way for the next 15-20 years! But it will be fun to watch Marshall grow - I was going to open a bookstore but someone has beaten me to the punch! Marshall also needs a restaurant on the river (although that will be a tough sell until they allow the sale of liquor) How does Hot Springs get around the dry county law? Also it would be great to have a small outfitter store like Bluff Mt. Outfitteres in Hot Springs. We can't wait to be a part of the well-planned growth in Marshall.
