We have a home there for many years and always love spending time up there
How is the elementary school
What about extracurricular activities
What to do in the winter with the kids, locally
Is the economy really bad because of the fall in construction.

Hi Joe, welcome to the forum!

From what I've heard, the school in Banner Elk is a good one, don't know about the extracurricular activities.

Winter is awesome, with skiing, tubing and snowboarding. School is canceled at the first snowflake!

Yes, the economy is really bad. Have your employment lined up before you move here full time! Also, 4 wheel drive is a plus in Banner Elk in the winter.

Blessings!
Tracey

The young son of our former next-door neighbor went to Banner Elk Elementary and I have always had the impression it is a good school - I don't have children, so I have no firsthand knowledge. However, when the boy was nearing high school age, they had an opportunity to move to Boone (he was a builder with a vacant spec house) so the son could attend Watauga High, which they preferred over Avery High.

I agree with Hymnsinger... if the kids like snow sports, you're in luck as to winter time activities.

I haven't checked it out, but the new YMCA between Newland and Linville could another good source for extracurricular kids programs.
