My son will be attending App. State in Boone this fall. I know when we went for a visit our Cingular phones did not work at all. My husband has Nextel and the service was spotty. Would like to know what service works well in that area and also the Asheville area where the rest of the family will be living.

I go up to my cousin's place, which is in the mountains about 40 miles from Boone and have no service at all with Cingular. Shoot, I have no service as soon as I get off the interstate! My cousin has Verizon, which seems to be about the only one reliable there.

I know for a fact that Verizon has good service in Asheville. I don't know about Boone, but no wireless carrier is reliable in the mountains. Most cell towers are on the ridges of mountains, and if you happen to be in a valley blocked by another ridge... good luck. Your phone might have a full signal half a mile up the road, but not at your house. But I can vouch for Verizon being reliable for Asheville and the southern mountains.

Default Cell Phone

We have a time share in Blowing Rock and I get no service with Nextel, but once I get in Boone near the University, my Nextel has worked fine.

Maybe you can call the school. There are area's in Boone where my Nextel did not have any signal at all.

Default Cell Coverage

I live over in the Jefferson area (North of Boone off 221) and use Verizon with no more problems than I encounter around Greensboro or Winston.

I attend ASU in Boone and have no problem with my Cingular service. I do, however, use and older model Nokia which I have always gotten good service with.

Thank you to all...

I am going to miss my son sooooo bad when he leaves. The cell will be the only thing that will help my insanity. Yes, I do realize I am overprotective. I am working on it. Do they have AA for mom's whose first kid is going to college? Perhaps Moms anonymous or something?

August is coming so fast!
