Anyone else notice this in Asheville? Seems to me that it's getting pretty bad nowadays.

I think it's getting bad everywhere. Too many people driving with too little experience and too many distractions.

Yes - if the streets are not so clogged that you can't move at all. Seems to be one or the other most of the time. I assure you though that I am NOT one of the 'problem drivers', so if you aren't either, there are at least 2 sane courteous people in the area!

Am I correct in understanding that it is not illegal to drive while on the phone here and it does not have to be a hands free set up? That's what I was told, at any rate and it astounds me if it's true but if it's not, it's not being enforced. It drives me batty to see someone get in a parked car, pick up the phone and THEN try to back out of a space!!! Next time you're at a stoplight or a 4 way stop, take a look around at how many heads are down, looking at a phone, texting, facebook whatever. Brings new meaning to defensive driving.

It's illegal to text but as far as I know, not illegal to talk. I don't think it would stop people though. It's pretty unenforable IMO.

This is why autonomous cars can't get here quick enough.

I almost got run over the other day in the Waynesville Walmart parking lot by an elderly lady who was so busy trying to answer her flip phone that she couldn't steer her car.

Old people and cell phones are funny. They're from a time when phone calls were a big deal, so therefore every call must be answered, regardless of what they're doing at the moment.

Sadly, yes--unfortunately, the cops can't even note on an accident report whether someone was talking on the phone or not! Telecommunications lobby, I presume??

Just arrived home via I-40. I passed a women going under the speed limit in the left hand lane intently staring at her screen while driving. Unbelievable
