My husband and I are looking for a few acres (3+) where we could build a home in a year or two. We'd like some elevation (2,000-3,000) where we could have a home, a workshop building, a few animals, windmill. We need high speed internet, TV and cell service, water and septic. We could do our own electric if need be. I don't mind living a few miles from town but I am not sure about living a distance from health care. Note: I was hoping not to spend too much over $50,000 for the land. (Are you laughing now?)
Is this an impossible dream?
We appreciate all of your suggestions!
We'll be visiting your area next week! (for the fourth time) It is so beautiful!
Thank you!
Joan

Actually It's not at all impossible. I have discovered quite a few properties that fit that bill. Mtnman might be able to help you out. He is a local in Rutherford county who seems very tuned in on these matters. He might be a big help!

Good Luck!

Ashe County, Allegheny County and western Wilkes county might be worth checking out, too.

We bought in Rutherford Conty.
17 acres, driveway roughed in and underground power for $45000 or so.Has several streams on the property and is bordered by a larger creek.

We have spent about $45,000 on having a 'barn'(30'x36' two story with apartment upstairs) built and the driveway finished.
We plan to build a small farm on the land and live a quieter way of life.

It is in a 'development' but has very few restrictions, mainly no mobile homes, junkyards or dividing the land to smaller than 2 acre lots.

There was a smaller parcel available in the same development for around what you were asking.

I think Rutherford county offers the best of both worlds,it is hilly without being mountainous and is close to bigger cities if you need to work in one.

The closer you get to Lake Lure the more land seems to be.

The poster said they wanted elevation 2-3000 ft. How high is this area. I too am looking but I want to be at at least 1500 feet preferably 2000. Does Rutherford qualify. Also can some one give info on difference in elevation, climate, humidity between say Asheville and Brevard. Is it terribly humid in Brevard as opposed to Asheville, and more rainy?

Well almost ANYTHING is higher elevation than where we are currently living...

Elevation varies throughout the county nearly 3000'.

Of course with elevation seems to come extra cost, you pay for it dearly and the land isn't as useful for raising animals.

Why do you need it to be at that elevation?

We initially looked at buying deep in the mountains and found out pretty quickly the downsides, you better make sure you get sunlight during winter or the snow doesn't melt and we are both totally unused to snow...

Rutherford county is in an 'isothermal region',what this means exactly is beyond me but when it comes to weather it seems to mean it is not as extreme as other areas.

Hi Joanie,
If I can be of any help to you, or any of the other posters looking at Rutherford or nearby counties, please let me know. As stated before, price goes up with elevation, views, and water. What you are looking for is doable. Please email, or PM me if I can help.
Thanks
