Taxes in North Carolina are very high. Alot of people here don't notice it because they are used to it. This is from the North Carolina families coalition website regarding the subject: North Carolina ranked among the 10 worst states, coming in at 44th, the lowest ranking in the Southeast. Only Minnesota, Rhode Island, Vermont, California, New York, and New Jersey ranked worse than North Carolina. The five states with the best tax systems, according to the report, are Wyoming, South Dakota, Nevada, Alaska, and Florida.

It really is no suprise. If you do a little research you will find almost 8 out of every 100 people here are employed by either state or local government. That is among the highest in the nation. We have to pay for it somehow. We need your money too.

For all of you people that are saying it is a ridiculous notion that a state could tax you furniture, guitars, lawnmowers, etc every year, well you are wrong. Yes, NC doesn't currently tax all of your personal effects, that's only because of a law suit that was brought against the state that forced it to repeal that onerous tax in the mid 90's (1995 if I recall correctly).

So I'm sure that the friend that was complaining about that tax hadn't lived in NC in quite a while, he used to be correct, just not any longer.
