Just from google maps it looks like the 'hoods in south asheville have the easiest access to the parkway and all that. Is this true?

and where would you recommend looking in that area?

Do people in Asheville really talk about "the hood"? Yo, the mean streets of Asheville! Do you mean the Blue Ridge Parkway? Lots of other rec areas, as well, from Chimney Rock to the waterfalls of Transylvania County, etc., etc.

hoods as in 'neighbor'hoods, I think. I always thought, the hood was something else - but since I am not a native speaker

The great thing about this area is that outdoor recreation is not limited to one part of town. You can get to the BRP from East or South Asheville very easily, but then you need to decide if you want to be closer to Chimney Rock or Dupont State Forest or Pisgah National Forest, etc. Whatever 'hood you choose to live in, you'll end up driving a bit to get somewhere else eventually.

Yes, S. Asheville/Arden area is the closest to the parkway and the NC Arboretum. you can pick up the parkway and instantly you'll be at N.C.'s mountains to sea trail. Beautiful keep heading a little further up and you'll be atop Mt. Pisgah.

North is just as easy to access the parkway if you know where to go. In fact all but west asheville has some pretty close spots. West is close to 26 though that can take your right to the arboretum.

I'm so sorry my use of the word 'hood' caused such a ruckus.
