Hi,
I am moving to Highlands in a few months and was wondering if there are any gun ranges / shops in the area. If not is there a need for a gun store(plus fishing and outdoor supplies) with an indoor and outdoor range? I was thinking of a small indoor range for pistols, a 200-300yd rifle range, trap & skeet, and maybe a paint ball area. I would like to open a small one but not sure how successful it would be. Not looking to make a fortune just start my own small business and would pay cash for everything. It would have to be outside of town where property is not supper expensive. I understand prices there somewhat since I just bought a home at the Old Edwards Country Club.
Thank You for any feedback,
Jack

Maybe near a place where hunting is popular. I see the gun industry going up and more people wanting to practise. I wish u success, even if u do the business from ur own home. Gunsmith may be a valuable service or training. I think many people keep guns in western nc but that doesnt mean they know how to shoot them. Crime is suppose to go up with bad economy and with Obama being anti-gun people are more motivated to get their hands on the big boys now.

I'm in 'western NC', as in Waynesville...I shoot with several friends on occasion, but often 'outdoors' on one of our pieces of property, very safely.

Have you GOOG'd 'ranges'? Not an expert on Highlands area, though it is quite lower population from late Oct through April, imo.
Here are some links that might be of interest...GL, mD

well, probably the answer is not much interest from the locals and natives. So if you did a business plan, you might look at a tourist trade from Atlanta or somewhere who might like this as an activity while they are visiting.

Yeah the population def changes in the winter months so i would probably just be open in the higher traffic times and would probably have out of towners as main customers. I have seen a gun shop in Franklin but they don't seem to have a range. Most ranges in NC seem to be outdoors and maximum range of 100 yds. I was thinking if it was set up right you could try and get summer camps and law enforcement as customers. I would only stock higher end guns but mainly make money on ammo sales and range rental times. Most Gun sales would probably be at gun shows. I will be living full time in Highlands by November and will be scouting property and interest for a range/shop in the area. I am also getting info from the NRA on expenses and range design. Thank ya'll for the info. Anymore would be appreciated.

Your main problem will be the NIMBY's that live there in the summer and fly south for the winter.

Jack,
I'm in Highlands full time and there are no indoor ranges locally. There is one in Brevard, NC, called Bear Arms. My wife and I just got concealed carry permits and I plan to take her over there soon to try out several hand guns and select one that she'll be comfortable with. Thunder Pawn in Franklin does sell guns and I would assume there may be others.
I'm in the RE business in Highlands and would be glad to help you locate a suitable place.
