Of course now, 100 years later, the Keweenaw is paradise once again, although there are still problems with toxic waste, etc.

So yeah, I'd rather for there not to be any mining, at least near where I live...lol.
or today see mountaintop removal in West Virginia and nearby coal country:

No clue why that should be permitted. Locals are desperate for jobs and mining is part of their culture. Short term gain, gone for forever, at least in human terms.

Likely the people who are anti-mining don't equate mining = good for humans and either:

1) Have little connection or knowledge of resource extraction industries
2) Seen a lot of negative effects of mining

On the flip side, fuel prices here are cheaper compared to most other 1st world countries. Petrol costs about $1.30-$1.50 a litre (compared to $2+ in Europe and $2.15-2.35 in NZ) with Norway charging in excess of 1.9 euro ($2.8), how the hell people drive there is beyond me. Check it out http://www.fuel-prices-europe.info/ At that price it would cost me $170 to fill my 60 litre tank. Jesus christ!!!!!!

LPG is currently going for 68c / litre (in NZ it is anywhere from $1.00 to as high as $1.73) and in Europe LPG seems to be in excess of 0.80 euros a litre up to 1.2 euros in places like Denmark (which would be $1.15-1.7). My car runs on LPG, it cost me about $35 to fill the 60 litre tank and lasts me a good 8 days commuting to and from work.

If the total tax is constant, I don't see the big deal of say, lowering sales taxes and raising energy taxes. Still, $3.90 / gallon gas is nice.

Happy that I've found a new geeky hobby - I was curious to see what the averages are for Swedish cities during 1981-2010. SMHI don't publish them, but I can actually use weatheronline's climate robot to see what the averages are between 1982-2010. I'm currently looking at Sundsvall.
