You can just as easily add 1996, 2001 and 2006. 1996 and 2001 both had slightly above average temperatures and were sunny, while 2006 had a warm and sunny June, a hot and sunny July, and a cool and cloudy August.

Even March 1962 would not have been this bad despite being "colder". It had a much warmer average maximum temperature apparently, but colder nights, so much sunnier and nowhere near as much snow (than we've had anyway). Sounds it was a much better month than this one.

Pattern matching is right only about as often as it's wrong, but the last March similar to this was in 1962, and that year only had 25 days above 70F in Hampstead (about half the amount we normally get, perhaps even fewer), and its warmest month in July only averaged 19.2C/11.5C - and that's in London! I wouldn't even want to know what kind of horrendous Octoberesque non-summer you probably got that year up where you are
Summer 1962 in Aberdeen:

June - Mean Max: 17.1C, Highest: 24.4C, Sunshine: 187 hours, Rain :32mm, Rain days: 14
July - Mean Max: 15.0C, Highest: 21.6C, Sunshine: 118 hours, Rain: 81mm, Rain days: 13
August - Mean Max: 15.9C, Highest: 19.6C, Sunshine: 154 hours, Rain: 162mm, Rain days: 23

Even that pile of tripe would still be an improvement on last summer, as indeed would a repeat of any summer in the past 100 years.

June 1962 in fact was better than any summer month since July 2006 which isn't too difficult given that there have been zero sunnier and drier than average summer months since then.

Even July, which was the second coldest in the post war record, and August, which was the wettest of the century, would still be much preferable to July and August 2012 because of the much higher sunshine.
