After what should be a warm first few days of meteorological autumn, the latest GEFS and CFSv2 showing a cool spell for the Central US as we head further into September

I'm going with mostly above average temperatures for September, using the weak La Nina analog year of 2000-2001 right now. I'm thinking a stronger cold front in October with a widespread hard freeze in many areas of the US, even lower latitude locations.

I would agree. Especially if we get more tropical development in the Gulf that usually pushes warm humid air into the Midwest. Though there could be interludes of cool temps which isn't uncommon even during warm Septembers
Sept will be blazing hot with under 3" total like the last two Septs.
