850mb is an elevation of 5000' above sea level. Due to near constant pressure across there, it's a good level to have approx temperatures taken. Below that, pressure varies too much causing discrepancies in approx temp.

Normal High for Nov 22nd is 52.
Normal high here for October 27th is 60F at IKK, 59F at MDW, and 58F at ORD... We'll be well below that

Right. Thanks. 850mb level controls the surface temps but not exact of course. Theres other factors like sun, terrain, moisture, ect that will affect the surface but you can get an idea of whats coming by looking at that level above. Its also important to know for when there is frozen precip around.

Its fun seeing the swings in and out at 850 vs the surface. Much more fluctuations at the surface.

Wow! I thought maybe a couple days but its an interesting stretch. I'll grab the past 7-14 day temp departure map later. Still above normal for the month though.

As of yesterday ORD has a mean of +0.1F.. So definitely we will be below average for the month before it's all over.

It is just fascinating to me how different the two halves of October have been here in Indianapolis. After the first 10 days of the month were above, sometimes well above, normal, we've now spent the last 13 days below, sometimes well below, normal. The the first 23 days of October, we're more than 6 degrees below normal for this time of the month. And nothing above 54 is forecast for the next week, though we could maybe hit 60 again on Halloween. We had our first official snowflakes the night of the 12th, though nothing stuck to the ground thankfully as the earliest date we've ever had measurable snowfall is October 18th. Our average first measurable snowfall isn't until November 19th. But this chart really tells the story of two totally different Octobers! Just such a sharp change that isn't letting up.
