Today we’ve had some snow as low as 1200 m asl (4000 feet) in north eastern Italy, with 30 cm accumulation (12”) at 2000 m.
It definitely won’t make the headlines...
1st of the season so yeah, "news". Wouldn't say its "big" news though and not sure if anyone did actually.

Probably because it didn't happen? No way 4000' got snow and a foot of snow at 6500'. What latitude? Have a forecast to post from there?
It says “snow as low as 1200 m in Dobbiaco and Sesto (two villages in Val Pusteria), and 30 cm accumulation at 2000 m in Val Badia and Val Gardena (two valleys in the Dolomites)”
As for the latitude you could just take a look at a map: Dolomites are between 46N and 47N.
But snow in late August can also happen in the Appenines 50 miles east of Rome...

It says "above" 1500m (5000') which is believable but either way... wow! And yeah, checked map. Alto Adige is 46.43°N for those wondering. Thanks for the link!
Monday morning snowfall expected on the Beartooth Highway
Summer snowfall in the Beartooths' higher elevations isn't without precedent, said meteorologist Brian Tesar with the NWS office in Billings. But he added it's still earlier than normal.
"It's within the range of what occurs up there, but it's unusual," Tesar said, "There's no doubt it's unusual for August."
