Went chasing after one, lol. The storm was on the other side of town to begin with so I was always a step behind, but I did see a couple cloud-to-ground strikes. Looks like a few other areas starting to bubble up, not sure if I'll try any more. Would have to be west of Lexington because traffic is just too heavy now.
Wow, deep booming thunder with the sun out! A new storm has popped up a few miles from my house. Can't believe how today has turned out considering there was only a 20% chance.
Monthly-record breaking high of 37.0C at Nice Airport today. Unless I'm wrong this is also the second highest ever after Aug 1, 2006´s 37.7C. Sadly I wasn't there to experience it, and enjoying an otherwise pretty refreshing 21C in Paris. I guess Rozenn should have more input on this hot afternoon on the Riviera, if he hasn't posted already.
Didn't get the chance to post about it, but I hadn't realized it was such an event climatically-speaking for the region. Says how moderate the local climate really is. I was at the supermarket when the wind picked up. It was 29°C with a 21°C dew point when I entered (84/70°F) and jumped to 36°C with a 9°C dp (96/49°F) one hour after when I crossed the parking lot to reach my car. As soon as I went out I thought "foehn", though I was surprised when I saw the actual temperature, as it didn't feel any more oppressive than the humid warmth one hour before. Just different. But then again a dry 37°C wouldn't be out of the ordinary in the rest of southern France.
Those two foehn episodes kinda ruined the monthly temperature graph.
The dew point hasn't fully recovered since, it reached 21°C/70°F at midnight and is now at 20°C/68°F, but went down to 8°C/47°F this morning.
At 4PM today, the temperature in Pittsburgh was 91°F, which makes this only the third day of 90°F temperatures this summer, and also the hottest day of the year regardless of whether or not the temperature goes any higher. The high temperature was 90°F on June 11 and June 12.
Pittsburgh actually averages 10 days of 90°F temperatures per year, not the eight days that's commonly cited, so the tally is running a bit behind this summer. Pittsburgh had 340 days of 90°F temperatures from 1980-2014 (35 years), which averages out to 9.7 days per year.
At 3PM today, the temperature in Athens, GA was 97°F, but dropped to 96°F at 4PM, so a second 100°F day for the year is not likely. I feel like I missed out on the one 100°F day I've had so far (June 22), because I slept all day that day.

Damn, that's a dry air mass. Diurnal temperature ranges like that are typical in the interior of California, so I guess they aren't joking when they say that much of California has a Mediterranean climate. By the way, 36°C roughly equals 96°F, and 37°C roughly equals 99°F, so you're close to the "century mark" there. (Have you reached 38°C there this summer?, because that roughly equals 101°F.)
