I think CCATL might be exaggerating just a tad. The average high for this date is still a sultry 88 degrees, dropping by one more degree by Sept 1. But you will notice a considerable cool-down as we progress through September. The average high drops to 85 by the 10th, 82 by the 20th, and on the last day of Sept, it's cooled down to a not-too-shabby 78 degrees. And it does get much drier as well - today does feel a bit Septemberish in this regard.
Really, my fave month of fall is November, as that's when we hit peak color (3rd - 11th), and the average high drops from 67 degrees to a brisk(ish) 59 degrees by the end - ahhhhhhh - my kind of weather. The golden sun, blue-dome skies, DRY air, and oh-so-wonderful coolness in the morning with all that color...I call it total bliss. That is one time of the year when you'll say "I love it here in Atlanta!" LOL.
Can't wait. Can't ya tell I'm excited?
I don't think I was exaggerating THAT much. But yes, I do agree that there is a noticeable cool down in September, however, IMO the reason it is so noticeable is because of the drastic drop off in humidity that tends to occur later in the month rather than solely due to a temperature drop. We still do definitely get days in the 80's through October though, although the averages do drop off into the 70's-60's. For example, look at our temperatures last year for the month's of September and October (keeping in mind that last summer never really got as hot as normal):
We had some pretty big swings at the end of September, but we were still hitting highs above 80 occasionally through October 13. We also had highs of 70+ at least once a month thereafter, except for January (which was bitter last year ). I'd compare our early fall to a typical northeastern summer, and our winter as a northeastern fall, where temperatures can swing from 40 degrees to 70 degrees within a few days of each other throughout the winter.
I'm excited for fall too though! Fall and spring are really great times in this city, especially with all of the festivals going on!
Yes, but you recieve almost the double precipitation that we do. Didn't see you posting a July summary, but we've had only 9.8" the whole year so far until August.
Wasn't comparing to you, mainly just pointing it out because I thought it was interesting how much of our rain was in one day. Plants seem happy with it, doesn't look dry. 9.8" to the end of August would create a parched landscape here, with the vegetation used to more rain (not drought tolerant at all) and the hotter summers. Thankfully don't think it's possible, or at least hasn't been recorded yet.
Btw, storms prevented ORD from hitting 90F today, but MDW hit 92 degrees... Also just hear that since June 1st Midway airport has received 25 inches of rain....

5pm heat index. Been there, done that, glad it's not here.
The Reason... See the Jet stream? Upper Low in the west forcing the dip there and a rise in the Central and then the ridge became elongated to the East. 588-594 Heights = HOT!
3 more days of this warm muggy crap and we cool off. So drained
Your right.. 2 more days. Last week models had Thursday also being warm and muggy. I hadn't checked for any changes until now and looks like the front is faster and so Thursday won't be bad.
Probably why Tropical storm Cristobal isn't affecting us. Had the front come on Friday we would be feeling some affects as it would be closer. Timing is amazing with weather events.
Wednesday should be hottest day.
Euro says Sunday dewpoints in 70s and max temps in mid 80s but I thought this weekend was cool. Haven't looked into it, too far away and have a Headache
