I wonder how big of a role the positive NAO has on the fact that NYC (and the Northeast in general) has been hard pressed to see very cold temps in recent years? Not since the mid 70's has it been in a negative phase, but it seems that in a few years that might be changing
Bastardi posted the 1977 and 1985 Arctic outbreak showing the position of the Polar Vortex.
It might play a role, but very cold (subzero) temperatures have never been NYC's thing. In the past 70 years, Central Park has gone below zero only 7 times, bottoming out at -2F.
1977 was a big drought year for California, btw. Like this winter.
That's interesting. And 1977 was a weak El Nino winter with low sun spots. Me personally I don't see how we're going to top what just happened so I believe its the bottom...the peak... the coldest we will get... Then again... maybe one more time might as the swings come through again end of month.

1977 was the winter that kept on giving here. Coldest January on record. But interestingly, Spring was above average, with a very warm May. Also an average summer with July being above average). Autumn was cooler than average... I was only 5 in 77'

Probably right. I can't imagine another blast AS cold as this one coming again.
Raw day in Miami (by their standards). High of 58 F/14 C and mostly cloudy. Currently 55 F/13 C with light rain.

The highs and windchills were notable in the northeast for this arctic blast, but the low temperatures were nothing to write home about. I wonder if I'll see anything approaching -20 F here during my lifetime. The record low is -29 F (1994). 2009 dropped down to -15 F.
Tuesday marked day 10 this winter at or below zero. Only 4 other seasons since 1871 have logged this many by Jan. 7th in Chicago.
Let's see if we stay below zero until midnight and make it 11 times. Right now it's -1F at O'Hare and 3F at Midway. It's 6 degrees F here in the far south suburbs of Chi-Town
Only 6 days worth but check out the monthly departure from normal at Duluth & International Falls Minnesota.
INL hasn't been above 11F this month yet.
