Storm with a central pressure near a 112 year record sends powerful 50+ mph gusts into Chicago after drenching Thursday rains
Posted on Feb 21 2014 - 12:44 am by tvallewgntv
By Meteorologist Tom Skilling

Make no mistake about it. The storm behind the powerful winds which continue to rake the Chicago area with roaring winds Friday, is one powerful system.

Gusts hit 70 mph at the offshore Harrison-Dever Crib Thursday evening and 64 mph gusts in downstate in Springfield Thursday afternoon. Other Chicago area gusts late Thursday included 63 mph at Carbon Hill; 59 mph at the Midway Airport automatic reporting station and 58 mph at Beach Park, Paxton (in Ford County), Shorewood, Waukegan and Gary, IN.

Ahead of the non-thunderstorm wind gusts noted above, central and southern Illinois had been raked by strong thunderstorms along a Thursday afternoon squall line which produced funnels and tornadoes responsible for damage.

The Minneapolis National Weather Service forecast office noted in its discussion late Thursday that this northbound storm’s projected Friday central pressure of 972mb (which equates 28.70″ of mercury) may well equal the Badger State’s record for its lowest February barometric pressure of 972mb recorded on Feb. 28, 1902 —-112 years ago!

Little wonder the system has been behind the production of some extraordinarily wild weather in its northeastward trek across the Midwest.

Multiple tornadoes touched down in Illinois

As of yesterday Chicago's Mean temp is 11 degrees below normal. As of the 20th, Chicago this February is tied with 1979 for 3rd coldest on record 16.7F/-8.5C. Only 1875 and 1936 were colder, but the month isn't done yet.

That pressure only breaks the record for that one city. Kinda misleading title since there have been storms like this all the time, just different position/track.

Wish those records were easily found. I'll see what I can get to see what other area records were and when.

Edit:: Looks like Euro00z saying 976mb storm is 50mb stronger than normal. trying to confirm how accurate Ryan's map is here.

Well it's referring to the lowest barometric pressure in the state of Wisconsin right?

LOL. I read "Badger" and thought it was a city in Wisconsin. LOL. Yes, impressive for sure.

But not to confuse others, storms like that have happened. It just took the track to give WI lowest Pressure in 112 yrs. And Lets not forget how long weather on Earth has been around either before some jump to you know what conclusions. Wish we can go back JUST 200-300 yrs and not a measly 120yrs

And it's just a February record, not a whole-winter record. Nevertheless, it's in the upper tier of powerful storms in that part of the world.

Gotta laugh at how that "record low" pressure reading is like the same as the average pressure for some UK stations this month.

Low pressure systems in the middle of a continent a thousand miles from the ocean, are not the same as low pressure systems out at sea that effect island nations.

Regardless this storm is power house. Now 13 confirmed tornado touch downs in Illinois alone. Feet of snow for Wisconsin.

A half inch of heavy rain this morning took care of all but the very last vestiges of snow here. The small creek which runs through my property is well out of its banks, spreading far across the pasture. This creek has its point of origin just a mile or so upstream from me and I can only imagine that the flooding will be worse the further down stream it gets. Heavy volume of water gushing out of the horizontal overflow pipes in the berm of my pond and flowing across the pasture to the creek.

I am not looking forward to the return of cold temps this coming week and am so ready for spring to arrive.
