California's drought continues with 2013 now certain to be the driest year on record. Local forecast calls for highs in the low to mid 60s and lows in the low 40s and straight sunshine from today through the end of the year. Hopefully, the new year will bring in some badly needed rain.

The snow is slowly winding down and the plow guy is coming over in a little bit to clean this up. I've lost count for the snow totals this winter. NWS is saying below normal temps and snow throughout the week.
And as of 4 PM it doesn't look like it's warmed up much from there . NYC got up to 71F today and has since cooled down a bit, and Newark got up to 72F; there definitely appears to be something of an urban heat island+elevation effect going on in that region. Below are the current temperatures - a heat island centered around NYC/Newark stands out as does a ribbon of warmer temperatures up the Hudson River area. You can also see very clearly other local effects including the onshore flow keeping things cooler in NJ, CT, RI, and Long Island, and the cooler air present at higher elevations, as well as perhaps some cooler air streaming off the Great Lakes. This is one of those days where you don't even need a topographical map to tell you where the oceans and mountains are. This is the strongest example of these local effects I've seen recently.
