I seem to remember the 22nd was always flagged up for the possibility of some frosts. Model's been consistent on that.

Yeah, but it's more widespread now.. would be very unusual to have air frost that widespread so early in the season. Virtually unheard of in fact.

I'm eagerly awaiting the first day with a high below 50F, which would only be the first sine June.. lol..
Didn't quite get there today but the 6.0/16.4 was closer than I expected. Dewpoints hardly got above 5C all day which was a bit of a shock after the 10C+ we'd had in previous days. Took this picture showing a nice contrast between the browning horse chestnuts on the right (who turned brown really early last year too only it was a blight, don't know if it's the same this year) and the largely full-green trees on the left:

The blight is still there I believe. The trees turn ugly brown instead of yellowish.
Isn't this how a healthy horse chestnut tree should look like in autumn?

Frankly I don't remember how they were in my childhood, the pest has been around for long now. But it's true that last year was particularly bad. Some poor trees began to turn brown as early as May and were completely bare by early September. Some even had flowers in late September.

Here it's also the coolest day of autumn so far, with 18.6/6.3°C. Ground min temp was 3°C.

Is that due to drought stress? There are no trees like that here. A lot of trees began to change here in August due to drought stress.
