Sun statistics:
Brisbane: 298
Perth: 281. This report: Perth in November 2011 states the total as being the lowest in five years; however note that daily data is missing for two days (27th/28th) and if the above report is “ignored” then easily the lowest in 3 years.
The Alice: 253
Adelaide: 250 (1 D M)
Hobart: 243
Darwin: 229 (1 D M)
Melbourne: 198, around 88% of average, and the lowest total since 2000 (194). This continues a prolonged spell of mainly below average sunshine that began in April 2010 with only five months exceeding the average, by 15-20 hours, and just one exceeding 30 hours. The YTD total stands at 1927 hrs – 81% of average –, which is certainly the lowest amount, to date, at this site.
Sydney: 196, 86% of average, and the lowest total since 2001 (187). The five day consecutive run of no sunshine from the 21st to 25th is the longest such spell since June 2008 and also the highest for any November since measurements began at the current site in 1976. Furthermore, this continues a run of mainly below average sun that began in September 2010 with five months very barely exceeding the average, highest margin being 15 hours.
The YTD total stands at 2192 hours or 83% of average.

Rain (mm) statistics:
Darwin: 153
Sydney City: 148 (highest since 2007; 170). YTD 1290 – already exceeded the average of 1215 and highest since 2007 (1499)
Rose Bay: 145 (highest since 2007; 165). YTD 1308 – already exceeded the average of 1227.
Sydney Airport: 143. YTD 1130 – already exceeded the average of 1083 and highest since 1999 (1281)
Canberra: 116
Melbourne Airport: 109
Melbourne City: 107
Hobart City: 55
Hobart Aero 54
The Alice: 40
Perth Aero: 39
Perth City: 29
Adelaide: 25
Brisbane City: 15
Brisbane Aero: 15
Adelaide Airport: 14

In the case of Brisbane, at least for “new” sites, it was the driest November on record and at older ones the driest since 1982. Other much drier Novembers, however, has occurred in 1951 and 1967. In addition, no rain fell at all from the period of the 28th October to 23rd November – a dry spell of 27 days -, which is odd considering the weak La Nina pattern and further explains why I was hearing a lot of complaints from up north about the lack of rain. No rain fell at all in November 1842 and in 1951 rain did not fall on 29 consecutive days!

For Melbourne it’s the third consecutive wet November – that is monthly totals exceeding 100mm - and also the second wetter than average year in a row which has been very welcome after 13 years of mostly well below average rainfall!

Sunshine for some NZ main centres:
North Auckland: 223
South Auckland: 181
Wellington: 223
Christchurch: 232
Dunedin: 173
Invercargill: 159. A cloudier than normal month especially over the first half and the lowest total since 2004 (146). The last day of the month was “hot” by their standards with 25C being recorded.

YTD in the same order as above:
1898
1877
1780
1844
1583
1502

Sunniest centres by order of highest total.
(NI = North Island and SI South Island)
Nelson (SI): 2287
Appleby (Nelson region): 2279
Lake Tekapo (SI): 2196
Blenheim (SI): 2191
Ashburton (SI): 2019
Kaitaia (NI): 2012
Waipawa (NI): 2008

Cloudiest:
Franz Josef (SI): 1402
Palmerston North (NI): 1436
Reefton (SI): 1477
Wallaceville (NI): 1479

Rain (mm) statistics:
In the Auckland Region (half of the monthly totals fell during the first day):
Whangaparaoa: 29
Mangere: 48
Airport: 50
Albany: 55
Outside the Auckland Region:
Wellington: 97
Christchurch: 58
Dunedin: 67
Invercargill: 129mm making this the highest total since 2006 (162) and the YTD total stands at 1217mm, or 111% of the average, highest since 2006 (1262). All but three months has considerably exceeded the average.

^^ Excellent post!

Melbourne's sunshine suffered during November and the high rainfall was caused by heavy thunderstorm activity with 8 thunder days recorded. This burst of storm activity follows a number of heavy thunderstorms in September and October. Temps were actually slightly above normal and humidity was a feature of the month with dewpoints above 15C being a common fixture on the warmer days.

You omitted Whakatane, with about 2189. However, it is still of course a suspect (too high) EWS site, along with Albany ("North Auckland"), Ashburton (along with Balclutha, probably the most extreme case) and a host of others. On the other hand the sites at Palmerston North and Wallaceville have seriously disadvantaged exposures compared to their original ones, and give a quite misleading impression of the climates (both values are coming in at 150-250 per annum lower than with the prior equipment) . NIWA definitely don't have the time/resources to address this at present. Reefton site is near some very significant hills that cut out quite a lot of daylight, especially in winter. Franz Josef is quite close to the mountains - but about 400 hours sunnier than the earlier site which was much closer still.

Invercargill EWS had 13 hours less than the manual site in October and if earlier results for November count its November tally may be as low as about 140. The issue of the "uncorrelated" increased sunshine mean at In'gill manual continues - almost certainly observation methods.

In the case of Perth, a conservative estimate for the missing days could suggest a monthly total of about 297 hours, almost 25 below average.

On the NZ list, Tauranga (2107) is well ahead of most, as should be Napier and Gisborne when the Nov. numbers are available, as well as the "pretender" Paraparaumu AWS (Wellington region's equivalent of Albany).

Balakovo, Russia:

Mean temperature: -2.8 C (27F)
Mean maximum: -0.1C (32F)
Mean minimum: -4.8C (23F)
Absolute high: 10C (50F)
Absolute low: -15C (5F)
Total precipitation: 29mm (1.14 in) on 16 days

Usually November here is snowless, but the rainy and very gloomy month with temperatures in recent years higher than normal (normal is +3C or +5 C during the day and -2C or -4C at night). But this year the weather is completely different than I've seen for many years, in this November permanent snow appeared at the beginning of the month (usually permanent snow appear here is the beginning or middle of December, in last year it was December 31) and here were many clear days with frosty weather, the minimum temperature was -15 C, it is very cold and not typical for November in my town.

Still, it seems like the 1600-1800s were distinctly colder than today so it was unlikely to break records back then, but it is a few hundred years.

Boston recorded its warmest autumn on record.
I'd noticed people had been posting unusually high temperatures for the NE USA but I thought the October snowstorm had gone some way towards keeping close to the average.

True, me saying it's been one of the warmest Novembers in 350 years might sound impressive but in reality most of the warmest months have been in recent years - only three of the monthly records happened before 1850, and six in the past 20 years. It would be much more impressive if we got a month which was one of the coldest in 350 years considering December 2010 was the only one in living memory which falls in that category.

There's a video clip explaining why western Europe has had a warm autumn and eastern Europe such a cold one here:

Balice airport 51, Kraków city slightly less as it is located in a fairly deep valley, I'd say about 47-48

I guess one's definition of "cold" is defined to what someone is used to... My mother lives in Detroit Lakes, MN, about 40 miles out of Fargo, and I've never heard her complain about the cold here during the winter...

So your November was exceptionally sunny, and very dry as well.
