Heavy snow wreaks havoc in Midwest; Metrodome roof collapses - CNN.com

It is downright brutal out in the midwest.

Same here. Sidewalks were slightly crunchy and my driveway was slippery to walk on. Ice storm was forecast though.

The winter weather in Los Angeles is somewhat different at the moment; we're supposed to see record high temps today in many locations. The records for the San Fernando Valley are in the low 80s, and the highs are forecast to reach the mid 80s.

Although it has been a cold December so far in the USA (although the month is still less than half over, and the pattern looks to change in the next 6 to 10 days)…a low of less than 40 F in Miami is not really totally unusual: Each winter, one or two nights might fall to less than 40 F for a few hours. In fact, last year’s record cold winter had three nights that fell to less than 40 F in Miami. It looks like the huge cold wave giving Minnesota -35 F temps will make it all the way down to Florida and give them a few cold nights in the 30’s F this week. Miami might indeed make it down to less the 40 F on one of those nights…but that’s not all that rare. Here is just the last five years, most years had at least 1 night that made it down to less than 40 F in Miami:

Lows below 40 F at NWS Miami:

Winter 2009/2010 – 3 times (Jan)
Winter 2008/2009 – 1 time (Jan)
Winter 2007/2008 – 1 time (Jan)
Winter 2006/2007 – 0
Winter 2005/2006 – 1 time (Feb)

.
The thing that is so noteworthy about this cold wave is that it's happening in December....lows below 40F are very rare in December. When lows below 40F happen it's almost always in January or February...very rare outside those months. Here (im 20 miles northwest of Miami) it's supposed to be 32F on Monday night! It dropped to 33F on Tuesday morning here...that was nearly 10F below the previous record low! So yes, it is not over hyped..it's very rare to have frost here in December.

All the while Denver has had a somewhat mild fall. I can really only remember two major snowfall events so far this year, but snow melted about a day or two later. At least the nights are somewhat consistent.

Today was really warm in the northeast (given the season). Highs well over 50F. It was drizzling/raining though. I guess this is what winter is like in western Europe and PNW.

Still brutal here, the north wind will not take a break, very unusual Dec. weather, even for the Upper Midwest! I would expect to see this in January, not Dec., now temps are falling like a rock!

My driveway was bad so a friend came over with an old Farmall tractor to get the chunks the city left behind when they plowed. Some were the size of a basketball and one absolutely huge, not an exageration! Heavy wet stuff so even a really big snow blower would not handle it.

It was around 60 degrees today, too bad it had to rain the whole day. Still not bad for the middle of December in my book.

I'm seeing forecasted lows for Miami between 32-37, so it'll be interesting to see how low it goes. A Freeze Warning is in effect tonight.
