Not that fast.

The Acela is about 3 hours. It is supposedly 2:45 minutes but in reality it is more like 3 hours each way. That's a good 6 hours daily, plus time to and from the stations and waiting for trains, so you are looking at 7 hours probably.

More of a NY on the weekend thing.

(source: wife lived in NY, I lived in DC, and we spent many miles on the trains).

Worth noting that you're talking about $300 a day in Amtrak fares, give or take.

i work here but my office's HQ is in NJ and I had to go there to close a deal last week so I did that commute last week in about 2.5 hours one way on Acela Express. I may have to consider this one day myself but I would only do it with a partial week in NY/NJ and a pretty significant pay increase say a promotion to VP and a $450-500k total salary minimum. I've seen people do say Monday -Wednesday in NY/NJ and Thurs and Friday in DC...at least in jobs I have been in I have seen employers willing to allow a split week for high level employees. It was about $300 in cost RT last week and if I chose to do it the salary increase would have to be $3k a month or more NET after tax to make it worth the effort/travel vs. just taking/keeping a job here.

Can anyone help with what taxes must be set aside if doing consulting work in DC. I understand Federal, Social Security doubled but are there any other taxes that would be due if living in DC. Thanks

When Vice President Joseph Biden was a Senator, he rode the train daily for a great many years from Wash. D.C. to Wilmington, DE. He paid a premium to take the fastest train every day, and his Senate office was very close to D.C. Union Station. And I understand Congressman Floyd Flake was pastor of a church in Queens, NY all the time he was also a Congressman in D.C.

Which is only about halfway to NY. I guess you could do it if you were really committed to it, it's just not something I would ever want to take on.

I did a weekly Philly-DC commute on the bus for about two years, which, in travel time, is about the same as Acela NYC-DC. Of course, my commute was also about 10% of the cost.

Weekly, I didn't mind it at all. Even twice weekly I MIGHT have been able to swing. Beyond that, though...forget it!
