I'm in my mid-20s and will be starting a research job at NIH in the fall. I'm looking to live in a neighborhood that has youngish people (mid-late twenties) and is safe. Anything that can keep my commute down to under 30 mins each way by metro/bus would be just fine for me.
Any suggestions? Where do most young people working at NIH typically live? Bethesda or in the city?
Oh, one more thing. NIH doesn't exactly pay spectacularly so i'm hoping to spend upto (and preferably less) $1000 on rent. I don't expect to get a studio/1 bedroom with that little money, and have no issues with a good roommate. i.e. someone past their get blackout drunk every weekend phase.
Check out Bethesda. It has a good singles scene and is 1 Metro stop to NIH taking all of a minute. A bike would take about 10 minutes. You might even be able to walk. Now, price, that I am not sure of.
There are a fair share of apartments near NIH in the other direction- Grosvenor area. Again, a breeze of a commute, but not much in the way of a scene. Thus probably cheaper.
If I were your age and single, I would live in the City near the red line and commute out to NIH.
