"Van Gogh The Immersive Experience" is at 524 Rhode Island Ave NE through January 2022. The closest Metro Station is the Red Line Rhode Island Ave-Brentwood Metro station, 919 Rhode Island Ave NE with about a half mile walk.

The walk looks pretty straightforward, over the tracks, down Rhode Island Ave, a couple side streets, through a parking lot and then into a building that used to be a Big Lots.

How would you advise you adventurous, 70 year old mom about her doing this alone?

I would suggest getting off METRO at Union Station or Brookland and catching a Taxi/UBER/LYFT to drop off at the door. It's about 8-10 minutes from Brookland Station or 12-15 minutes from Union Station, both are on the Red Line. The area around Rhode Island Ave Station isn't so much unsafe from a crime perspective per se, more so all of the streets of busy/somewhat crazy traffic that crisscross those few blocks which would worry me more.

I agree with Kyle on the safety issue. I think it's eminently walkable for an "adventurous 70 y.o. mom". The area is gentrifying with a lot of new construction. There may be sidewalk blockages. The Metro is elevated above R.I. Ave. Once you get down to RIA, it's a short downhill to the McDonald's and then a right uphill into the SC.

Don't worry, it's MUCH easier than that -- but Google Maps hasn't been updated with the new street layout yet.

From the station turnstiles, turn RIGHT and go OVER the pedestrian bridge, then DOWN the steps. Then cross the Metropolitan Branch Trail and walk down Bryant Street, past "metrobar" (you can't miss the brown-striped rail car parked outside). The exhibit is just past metrobar.

The pedestrian bridge gets you past the tangle of traffic.

An updated aerial view is at this site, but strangely not on Google Maps:

The exhibit is in the former Big Lots building.
