I think GoodCoffee's post was meant as a compliment, not an insult. Based on the housing costs, many middle and upper-middle class people call Silver Spring home. I do think "black Bethesda" is an overstatement though, because there are a lot of non-black people who live in Silver Spring too (and I'll be joining their ranks soon!).
Between SS and Bethesda, SS is the more dangerous of the two, but neither are that bad. The schools in Bethesda are nicer, but like above posts, private schools are very expensive. It gets a little rough around Georgia Ave. in SS and toward The NE quadrant of DC in SS.
There are some neighborhoods of small (1300 sqft or so) older (1920's) houses very close to downtown Bethesda that seem lower-priced (relative to the rest of B/CC) and maybe a bit more down to earth (? I don't know about his last part -- anyone have any insight?). My husband and I are looking there -- just east of Wisconsin, south of the Naval Medical Center. Anyone have any opinions on that area of Bethesda?
