Hello. We are ex-DC residents who are coming back there to live. When it was my wife & I, we lived on U Street. Liked it a lot, but expensive & not too many families around (mostly singles, young Professionals). Now, we are coming back +1 (have a 10 month old baby girl) & also bringing back our 2 little dogs.

So, we still want a very much urban living/walking environment, but want a place with a bit more family appeal. Which do you guys think would be a better fit for us??

P.S. We are looking for the best bang for our buck, walking distance to the metro apartment in a pet friendly area. Thanks.

Silver Spring is far more affordable than Bethesda, which is one of the most expensive parts of the DC metro area.

Silver Spring and Bethesda are both very urban. Silver Spring is a little older, and much more urban demographically speaking.

Bethesda is much more expensive.

Try Arlington or Alexandria. Alexandria has been completely redone and is family friendly. Also very close to DC by metro.

Silver Spring is great. The Downtown area near the metro is very urban and walkable, plus it's very close to Rock Creek Park. I'll be moving there this summer myself for similar reasons. It's much more affordable than many other nice suburbs like Bethesda.

Both Silver Spring & Bethesda would offer the urban and walkable areas that you seek. As others have pointed out, Bethesda is extremely pricey but does offer better schools than SS and is also safer.

Silver Spring is more reasonably priced with a population that is more diverse and integrated compared to Bethesda. The downtown has been revitalized with several walkable areas however; on weekends it can be packed with teenagers. Crime is higher and there are certain areas to avoid, but overall the area is fairly nice.

I agree with this, which is why while it was convenient for me (in terms of commuting to DC, shopping etc) I decided to move. I did not find downtown SS very family-oriented. Bethesda is very nice but too pricey, like others said. However, I would still recommend Bethesda over SS, if you can afford it, that is.

I also think in general Montgomery County offers the best schools than other counties, be it in SS or Bethesda.

Yeah, our little one is still a couple years away from school, but we def want a safe place for her & us for a year or two while we get settled again. Montgomery seems to be a good fit since its close to the city, urban, relatively safe & affordable.

Maybe if we can find an affordable & big enough place in Bethesda we will go there cause it does seem a bit nicer. But still Silver Spring seems like it would offer more for the money, esp since we need to be near public trans. Walkability with useful things around are a big deal for us & a reason why we are moving back. Rock Creek Park is close by too, so that would be good for our dogs.
