I like CH. I've lived here for over 2 years and it's been great, but I have heard stories. Some drunk dude tried to mug my friend on Newton, I saw some kid get arrested in my back yard, and just before I moved in some guy was beaten on a nearby street and our neighbor had been stabbed in the neck by some guy he let in his home. There have been shootings too and I live a block from the metro. I used to live in Wesley Heights by AU. It's very different, but I feel/felt safe in both places.
wow, where exactly do you live Kevin? if you dont mind me asking
oh trust me CH gets grimey
places i suggest you do not go
the whole Clifton st, fairmont st, 1400Girard st, 3500-3900 blks of 14 st, Columbia height village is okay

You have to watch your back in every city, and DC/ Columbia Heights is no different. Everyone has a different tolerance level and perceived safety level, so it's hard to make blanket assumptions on whether or not the area is safe. For instance, 6800georgia suggested that you avoid Clifton St, and I think that Clifton by Cardozo High School is a very nice street. But I would say that there are no longer any "no-go" streets in the area, and if one is street smart, the likelihood of being a crime victim will diminish.
So,seems like Columbia Heights is gonna be a bet for me since I am looking at $400-500 shared-room range.I am resurrecting this thread for renewed comments! Thanks.

What comments are you looking for that haven't already been covered?
Honestly, Columbia Heights is one of the most-discussed neighborhoods on this forum. I don't think you're going to find that many opinions or suggestions have changed since February.

Well,I am a newbie on city-data.I was wondering whether the safety factor is still a concern or has it grown any better? Also, how far is it (commute-wise) to Washington Hospital Center? Thanks!
Actually, I bet you'll have a very hard time finding a room in a Columbia Heights group house for $400-$500 range. It may be possible with enough time and searching, but since CH has been gentrifying for a while now, average rents are much higher than that. I've lived in the DC area my whole life but just a few weeks ago moved to CH and, yea, it's getting pricey.
Safety is such a subjective issue, but I think most people would agree that while the area is improving and probably becoming more safe, it is still very much a transitional neighborhood. Certain blocks are more sketchy than others, but that's in the eye of the beholder too. I'm not a local crime expert, but the high concentration of public housing units hugging 14th street south of the metro is often blamed for stirring up a lot of the neighborhood crime. So proximity to one of these buildings is certainly something to consider when moving into the neighborhood.
As for the commute, that would be a piece of cake. I'd say it's easily reachable on foot from most of the neighborhood, especially eastern Columbia Heights (technically Pleasant Plains and Park View). There's also the H buses that run through the neighborhood (on Columbia Road and Irving Street) that serve the hospital center.
