I was looking for housing in DC this weekend and came across an apartment I really liked in Park View. Some refer to this area as Columbia Heights, while others refer to it as Petworth. The apartment is completely renovated and is situated in what appears to be a residential neighborhood on 6th St NW between Newton Place and Otis Place. It appears the general area across Georgia Ave is undergoing gentrification with condos going up and new businesses and shopping.

This is about a 2 block walk to the metro station along Georgia Ave and has wonderful and abundant on street parking from my initial assessment. I want to know though, would you feel safe in this neighborhood? Is this an area where I can expect my car to be vandalized and the windows smashed, or one I can safely park my locked car (assuming there were no valuables left in sight). Is this an area where I can walk home from the metro station after a late night out (say around 2AM).

I am trying to be specific as possible for the reason that I can see good things happening in the area, but also noticed boarded up buildings and remains of a blighted area likely avoided by most at one time. The insight of people familiar with the area is very much appreciated.

Sounds like Petworth, end of Columbia Heights area. Just to answer some questions, I wouldn't feel safe taking Metro alone at 2 AM anyway, cab it, for sure.

Just be safe is all I can tell you. Put car alarms, etc, the whole works. You just never know, what's that saying? Better be safe than sorry? Yeah...take the initiative, don't wait for something to happen for you to act.

I would just put a "no radio" sign in window and park it on the street.

I live in this area... haven't had a problem with car break-ins, but I have a junker and don't keep anything in view. For the most part the neighborhood is fine, but there are a few sketchy characters about. I wouldn't feel that safe walking to a metro station at 2am. In general things deteriorate farther south - as you get near the Park Morton complex.

Thanks for the response. Have you had any other issues in the area? House break ins, etc? Not sure where the Park Morton complex is being from out of town and all...

Are you saying further north into Petworth is actually safer? I.E. Allison St?

No... no break-ins or anything like that. My street (Quebec) is pretty quiet and well tended. There has been a nasty outbreak of drug/gang violence in north Petworth in 2010. Before then I would have said that the area between about Quincy and Allison was the best part of the area. But oddly enough Park View has been the quietest area in recent months. The houses tend to be a little bigger and the streets a little wider in northern Petworth, so many people prefer that area, but there really isn't too much difference in terms of demographics, crime, etc.
