I am moving to DC in a month. I want to live somewhere a short metro ride away from Union Station (I will work near there). Second, I want to be in a place where I can meet nearby single people around my age. (I am a 26 year old male.) I am not a partier, I don't drink much, and I'm not big into night life. I prefer board games, soccer, museums, exploring etc. What do you think would be the best area for me?

Capitol Hill is an obvious option, and Cleveland Park has also been recommended to me. I'd be open to something else though.

I prefer to spend less than $1,200 per month if possible, and I would be willing to live with others.

Thanks!

ehh...

For $1200 a month you should be able to find a studio or one bedroom apartment in Columbia Heights.

Yeah Capitol Hill is indeed the obvious choice. But yeah you might need more than $1200 but its not out of the question. I saw a place on the Hill that was $1300 walking distance to Union Station. So I say go for Capitol Hill. Cleveland Park is just as expensive as the Hill but kinda far from work.

Nope, try $1800, $2400 for a 2 bedroom.

OP can try Craig's List or apartmentshowcase.com but for $1,200 his best bet is finding something in Maryland, i.e. Silver Spring. Or if he really wants to live in the city, shared housing.

No there are cheaper apartments than that to be had in Columbia Heights. However, you can't expect $1200 to get you one of those nice condos across from Target but I've seen studios for $900 in Columbia Heights you just gotta know how to hunt. But yeah if something shiny and new is wanted then perhaps venturing out to Maryland would be the best option. Normally I'd recommend VA but really and truly $1200 is kinda bottom of the barrel around here and that $1200 would go further in MD along the red line than in my town of Arlington.

I'm really curious to know where these $900 studio apartments are. I've got a few friends who are trying to move into the area, but the rent is super expensive. The condos across the mall, the one thats on top of Metro (Highland Park?), they go for $1700 up to $4500 for a 2 bedroom/deluxe apartment. That's insane.

$1200 a month is definite roommate or shared housing territory, and not in the tony parts of town either. I can't imagine a condo in C.H. going for that. Look to north-east in the Gallaudet area.

My first studio in DC was $900. Nothing to brag about, the building was old and I had some unclean neighbors but it was still decent and I was safe less than a mile away from two metros.

You can;'t live in those condos for $1200. You gotta get a little further from the metro I say. The Woodner has a studio for $925. Its on 16th street and while not right on top of the metro. I've metroed there before and it was fine walk.

Are there better apartments? You betcha. It has a pretty bad reputation on apartment ratings sites and such but its a roof for under $1000 in Columbia Heights :-). I've met 3 guys that live in the building and they seemed to be surviving but at the same time all 3 are younger and living the barebones fresh out of college lifestyle. One guy said that they had a bad bed bug problem but I've never left there itching so I guess they got that taken care of. Its a huge apartment building one of the largest in the city I've heard. So there they exist. And all 3 of the guys don't even know each other just coincidentally lived in the same building.
