So I am looking to purchase a Ryan Home in Howard county at Howard Square. I like the location however I seen the same home $30k cheaper in Glen Burnie at Fieldcrest Glen. I hear a lot about Howard Cty schools and how they are the "best" but I am not that impressed. Is Glen Burnie a decent place to live with a child in middle school? Should I even consider Glen Burnie over Elkridge (I believe that where Howard Square is located)?

It can be a decent place. I know people who have lived in Glen Burnie and achieved a good professional status in life. It is more a working-class area than Howard County. But if your child is motivated and you care about his or her education, then your child can succeed in life.

School ratings do not mean everything about the quality of life in a community. Furthermore, saving $30K in the cost of a house is significant.

Btw, you may want to check out the Ryan Homes FB groups. A lot of people participate, and you might be able to get feedback about those two communities from the perspective of people who live there, and about the quality of the staff there. We were blessed to work with a really great project manager, but that's not always the case with each community...

Seems to me your decision really comes down to the schools, right? So go visit both schools; and be sure to check out the high schools as well. I agree you cannot just go by the ratings online but you really need to get a feel for the schools in person.

I feel both places are ok to live with the Howard county schools rated higher (MD state test scores, average SAT scores are higher). I feel the student can get a good education in either area and its all up to the student and parenting to ensure the success of the student. The best school in the world won't help a student that is not motivated to be successful along with a strong coaching of the parents to do well in school.

Thanks for the feedback. School is only half the battle if your child is not motivated. That being said I believe the $30k difference is worth pursuing.
