True, I just thought it funny that they had to have that many people from different parts of the government go to what is considered a resort district in China.

Now of course they have to meet face-to-face. That's just good manners.

I received this today regarding the IHHAAC's position on the casino site. Generally a lot of what they says echoes what has been said before but they bring up some interesting points and impacts of the site selection

IHHAAC Board of Directors Votes on Casino Sites

On July 11, 2013, the IHHAAC Board of Directors discussed the merits of each of the three proposed casino sites in Prince George’s County. Given that IHHAAC is opposed to gaming in the County as poor public policy with more downside risks than upside gains, the Board approached the issue of site selection with one basic criterion in mind: which site would cause the least harm to the fewest people in the nearby communities? These are our findings:

MGM at National Harbor: the Board found the Beltway Parcel at National Harbor to be the least harmful for the following reasons:

There is substantial buffering between the site and nearby residences in the Oxon Hill communities of National Harbor, Forest Heights, Potomac Vista and River Ridge;

The requisite transportation infrastructure is in place with the exception of a ramp from Harborview Avenue onto MD 210 South, minimizing additional public investment; and

The highly visible site overlooking the Woodrow Wilson Bridge alongside I-95 with ready access from MD Beltway Exits 2 and 3 will draw through traffic off I-95—the main north-south arterial on the East Coast, as well as visitors to/from Virginia, the District of Columbia and Maryland, including National Harbor itself and Tanger Outlets, thereby yielding greater total revenue for the State and County than the other proposed sites.

Penn National Gaming at Rosecroft Raceway: The Board found Rosecroft to be undesirable and voted not to support this site for the following reasons:

Rosecroft is surrounded by a heavily populated residential community; a casino on this site would expose the neighbors to increased traffic, crime, and noise and light pollution well beyond that experienced with the existing harness-racing track;

Lack of transportation infrastructure would require public investment totaling hundreds of millions of dollars to create adequate access to the Beltway at the St. Barnabas Road interchange, taking an unknown number of homes in the process;

The only access to the site is via Rosecroft Blvd, a two-lane road; all connecting roads pass through heavily populated residential communities, thereby creating the prospect of a transportation nightmare throughout the area far worse than it already experiences; and

The modest number of slot machines and gaming tables proposed for this site would not yield sufficient revenue to begin to justify the additional investments of public monies in transportation infrastructure required to make this remote site adequately accessible.

Greenwood Racing/Parx Casino at Broad Creek: The Board voted to vigorously oppose selection of this site for these reasons:

The 22-acre site on Indian Head Highway (MD 210) at Old Fort Road North is adjacent to the Broad Creek Historic District in a heavily populated rural residential area; a high-rise casino/hotel/spa complex with structured parking for 5,000 vehicles is wholly inappropriate and ought to be unthinkable in such a setting;

Thousands of residents in such Fort Washington communities as Indian Queen, Tantallon, Warburton Oaks, Battersea by the Bay and Riverview, routinely access MD 210 (and return home) through the same intersection where the Parx Casino is proposed;

Indian Head Highway, Old Fort Road and Livingston Road are heavily clogged with traffic during rush periods and lack the capacities required to support the additional traffic which would be generated by a Parx Casino/hotel/spa;

While the Maryland State Highway Administration has an approved plan for reconstructing MD 210 into a limited-access, high-speed expressway, only the first of six planned grade-separated interchanges has been funded and it will not be completed until 2019; the proposed Parx site is at the third such intersection; several hundred million dollars of public monies (not now extant) and many years will be required before construction could get that far south;

Several previous proposals for development on that site, including a big box store, failed because ingress and egress is so difficult that no workable solution could be found; hence, the road structure simply cannot support the traffic which would be generated by a casino;

Stormwater runoff already floods the Broad Creek Historic District, especially St. John’s Episcopal Church (Est.1692); the impermeable surfaces inherent in the construction of a casino/hotel/spa complex with high-rise parking garage would make an already bad situation immeasurably worse; and

The obscure location three miles south of the Beltway in a rural residential area is unlikely to generate the customer traffic and therefore the revenue which the applicant has projected, thereby denying the State and the County the greater revenue which MGM could generate, not only at the casino itself, but also at Tanger Outlets and the many shops, restaurants and hotels at National Harbor—the so-called Crown Jewel of Prince George’s County.

ACTION RECOMMENDED

A public hearing will be held near each proposed site in the Fall.
Anyone interested should be prepared to participate.

IHHAAC Board of Directors Votes on Casino Sites
I really think the area will be okay with the MGM site. Time will tell. But it seems like people are starting to realize that if a casino will be built, they might as well get behind the best option.
