Looking at the winter only, there were still only about three winters with extremely cold winters in the Northeast. The discussion was about extremely cold winters (-30/-40 degrees). U.S. Climate Extremes Index
Agree on the "extreme" winter temps but I was replying to this:

There's been more than 3 "winters" in the "northeast" since 1979 with below average temps.

Additionally, Burlington, VT 3 of the Top 4 snowiest years since 1950 came after 2000

1970-71, 145.4"
2010-11, 128.4"
2000-01, 122.5"
2007-08, 120.2"

Heads up on Ice guys check your local alerts... accidents in parts of PA and now we have ice advisories here.

Sorry I wasn't as clear as I intended to be. My other point was it does not need to be very cold for it to snow. Typically when it gets too cold it won't snow. To clarify, at 32°F (0°C), a cubic meter of saturated air contains about 2.7 grams of water vapor. At 0°F (-18°C), it contains six-tenths of a gram, and at -40°F, it contains only 0.07 grams. This helps explain why the heaviest snowfalls almost always occur when the temperature is not far from freezing, about 24° to 32°F (-4° to 0°C). If anyone looks at the temps a couple of years ago, it wasn't always cold. Living in the Burlington area, I remember snow-blowing a lot, but I don't ever recalling deep snow. I think this is because we were always on the edge of the freezing temps and we had big melt offs. I do remember getting about 18 inches with one storm, and about a week latter it was all gone.
The point I was trying to make and wasn't clear on is because our climate is warming, we won't have the temperature extremes we had unless the climate obviously changes. This has little or no effect on snow accumulation. Nashville, TN is in the south, but the temps dip below 32 degrees for them to average about 6 inches/yr and upwards of 2+ feet of snow.

Some snow falling to the west in NY heading over... Light stuff. Temps are below freezing at the mid level so chances are good for snow if the surface is cool enough.

I see snow to freezing rain, to sleet, to rain starting Sunday at 10pm as snow and then changing to ice over night and rain by morning commute.

Just the way the "flow" is lately. Southwest to Northeast bringing warmer temps up with the system..... for now.

Things are changing.. A broad trough is starting to show its face. After mid month we'll see it established more often.

Could get messy indeed, all that moisture headed our way and temps are so borderline in some places.

What a fluke. Almost always the missus has to drive to work for 11 and home again at 7 in these things. And tonight she's just sitting here beside me, nice and comfortable. Her car is in the garage and I don't have anyone to worry about on the road. For this once I won't mind a sloppy storm.

Just rain near Rutland. I've pretty well had it with this weird weather lately. The warm ups in Spring and then frosts made for terrible nut and fruit crops, and this warm Fall weather and lack of snow made things even worse for deer hunting. I'd like it if we go back to nice cold, snowy winters.

I guess this rain could freeze overnight too, making for dangerous roads. I'll take snow over ice...

Agree 110% with both of you on this.

The apple crop was horrid in the woods this year, same with the nut crops.......

Not to mention I prefer a cold snowy winter filled with winter like activites that help support the local economy.
